It didn't. Richard looked toward the glowing ocean. The Origin emerged naturally when the first consciousness separated from the source. And Subject One? The glowing boy stepped out from behind them. He was watching the light with tears in his eyes. I remember now. Everyone turned. He approached slowly. I wasn't the first. Ethan looked at him. Then what were you? The boy looked toward the light. I was the first to leave. The first human consciousness to become separate. And that is why the Origin wanted you back.

The memory was seared into her brain. It flooded her with guilt and shame but it wasn’t enough to push away the butterflies in her stomach or the sweet throbbing in her neck where he had marked her with his teeth. It was short, intense and with a person whom she had never met before, a person that was like an abomination to werewolves. A human. Her heart leapt as she thought of her little act of rebellion. It left a bitter-sweet after taste in her mouth – if her kin were to find out –

"The long road ahead," Félix whispered. "The only road there is," I replied.

Finally, he released his grip on my waist and gently pushed me backward to sit back down on the chair. “Okay” he sighed heavily. “Okay?” I repeated, “Yep” he paused, blew out a breath, and began. “About a month before you woke up, we had some Weres visit. They came completely unannounced and with more Weres than a usual delegation. They were from a pack in Italy” Gunner explained, and I nodded along as he spoke. “The pack they came from is called Origin Wolf. History books say that the pack was created by one of the children from Lycaon, therefore they see themselves as royalty”

The white wolf sat at the highest point of the city, untouched by the fire. Watching. “This isn’t a simulation,” I said quietly. Kai didn’t answer immediately. His hand tightened around mine, grounding but tense. I felt it through the bond, that split in him widening again. The part of him that remembered this place. The part that had stood here before. “No,” he said finally. “It’s the origin.” The word settled into my bones. Origin.The first mistake. The first creation. The first fracture in time. A howl split the sky. Not pain. Not warning. Summoning. The white wolf rose.

YOU ARE NOT MY CHILDREN. Everyone froze. Orion looked upward. "What?" YOU ARE MY FIRST QUESTION. Anira's eyes widened. Liana felt the truth move through her. The Origin Ones had never been gods. They had been the first attempt. The first question asked by existence. They had created because they had been created to explore. But somewhere along the way... They had mistaken being first for being final. Orion shook his head. "We created the worlds." AND THEY CONTINUED. "We created the laws."

They were silver, endless, and unnaturally calm. “I am the Origin,” the projection said. “The first.” Kai stepped protectively in front of Evryn. “First what?” “The original host of the E.V.E.R. genome,” the Origin said. “The one from which all others were designed. Including Ivy. Including Evryn. Including every synthetic-hybrid iteration birthed by the Pre-Seeding Council.” Evryn’s heart pounded. “I’m not a copy.” “No,” the Origin agreed. “You’re the anomaly. The deviation.”

But there. "The Origin," I whisper. "What are you?" My mother finds me there. "Seraphina, you have not slept in days." "I cannot sleep. There is something calling me. Something I do not understand." She studies my face, her silver eyes dark with worry. "The Origin is not a place. It is not a being. It is the source. The beginning. The first spark from which everything else was born." "The first spark of what?" "Of us. Of the wolves. Of the moon. Of everything." She takes my hands. "The Origin is where we came from. The moment when the first wolf opened their eyes and saw the silver light."

“I did not share everything earlier because some of it concerns Selina directly and I wanted to tell her separately. Not in a room full of people.” “Tell me now,” I said. “In this room. With these people.” My mother looked at me for a moment. Then she nodded once. “The origin point is not a place,” she said. “It is not behind a physical door or inside a sealed location. It exists inside the completed veil bond itself.” She paused. “Between the two people who carry it. When the bond reaches full strength it opens a connection to the origin point from inside the bond. Not from outside. From within.”
