Perfectly satisfying. But fast on the heels of that thought was another. Her smile dropped away. She sat up, snapping the book closed. She wasn't supposed to enjoy being with him. In reality, he wasn't supposed to be perfect. He was supposed to be a disappointment. That was the plan, wasn't it?

Asshole better. Mr. Asshole mutters some incoherent words before carrying on with his lesson. After like, literally one second, Mr. Asshole sprints out of the classroom mysteriously without saying a single word. The whole class seems to be caught in some sort of trance, just everyone gaping at each other. And then all hell breaks loose. I have no idea what just happened because that was really confusing.

Dear Reader Thank you for reading the first chapter of the book called, My Perfect Mess. My Perfect Mess was originally written as an Interactive Story Game. I am in the process of adapting it into a novel form. The original version contains a great deal of dialogue to fit the platform for which it was intended. Though you can enjoy the story in its interactive format too as currently published. (eg when Becca speaks, the format will be as this: Becca ~ “What is there to explain, Matt.”)

“The pressure? The expectation that you have to be perfect every single time?” Kai paused, fork halfway to his mouth. No one usually asked him that. “Every damn day. One bad start and I’m yesterday’s news. You?” Theo’s expression softened. “All the time. Distance running is lonely, miles with only your thoughts. Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth it.” He looked up, eyes vulnerable for the first time. “But watching you run… there’s something raw about it. Beautiful, even.” Kai’s chest tightened painfully. The compliment hit deeper than any medal ever could. Under the table, their knees brushed and neither pulled away. The touch lingered, warm and deliberate, sending sparks up Kai’s thigh.

You put so much time and effort into it, that honestly you would be the only one I would trust to run a charity for RU’s humanity projects. You would know more than anyone else in our entire office, besides Dad and I.”

Jax stepped close enough that our shoulders touched. There was no theatrical display. Just certainty. The Run had not been about romance. It had been about structure. About proving that shared leadership did not fracture instinct. As the pack dispersed slowly, conversations low and satisfied, I looked at Derek and Jax beneath the silver light. “This quiet won’t last,” I said. “It never does,” Derek replied. Jax’s gaze drifted toward the dark tree line beyond the estate. “But tonight, they saw strength.” Yes. They did. The Mating Run had done what politics alone could not. It had sealed perception into memory.

I promised. She smiled at me and walked out the door. I went back to my room and threw myself down on the bed. This was the happiest day of my life. I decided to go on a run before she got back, I needed to work out to celebrate. I was a bit of a gym rat, and I loved the look of appreciation in her eyes as she stared at my body. I decided to take a different route than normal today, I went off near the wooded part of town and ran through the trees.

I switch it on then looking for entertainment news or show then suddenly a news caught my attention. ‘Breaking news one of the hottest supermodel now in America Miss Shane Sandoval is in a relationship now with her co-model Alexa Gray.’ My tears ran down to my face immediately watching Shane’s interview together with her new partner. They’re so sweet together, like a perfect couple of the century. I stand up but my legs are shaking and my body is trembling in anger. I'm lost now. I lost the woman that I love so dearly with all of my heart because of that one stupid mistake.

Model Perfect's schedule calls me. I delete my messages with Arlo and change his name on my phone to Anna. If Hunter sees another girl's name on my phone, he won't get suspicious. Maybe it's dishonest, but it's better than getting slapped in the face again. The red mark from yesterday is still there. It's a little red mark, with a dull ache that only my jaw can sense.

The crowd erupted. Not applause. Chaos. Shouting. Screaming. Phones waving wildly. The coach stared at the timer. His expression shifted. Confusion. Then shock. He looked up slowly. “Aldric Del Imperium — 10.18 seconds.” The world tilted. That’s— That’s not just beating me. That’s breaking my record. By six hundredths. Seraphiel straightened beside us. “10.22.” Second. Still faster than my 10.24.
