My Next Door Mate 25 Lisa door bell rings and the girls turned to look at the door. "Do you think it's Dan? Do you think he came to check up on you?" Audrey screamed. "Nah, I don't think so" Lisa chuckled "Gianna, check the door please?" She said. Gianna walked up to Lisa's door and opening it, she sees Ryan and Stephanie there. "Oh my God, so bad of me not to come thank you. Thank you so much for yesterday" Gianna stretch her hand for a handshake with Ryan and he received it warmly.

It wasn't just a feeling though, it was a fact. I earnestly looked forward to our next meeting, but it never came, or at least not as I had expected. However, two weeks after our first encounter, Ms. Ellen appeared at my parents doorstep with a jar of cookies, and a wide smile, introducing herself as our next door neighbour. And then I knew the world was playing tricks on me.

He was confused and so was Nick. Tyler sent them a tight smile as he held out his glass of whiskey and took a sip from it. His face was expressionless just like most times. Turning toward the men, he said in an overly bored and dry tone, his voice lacking any interest. “And that is my next-door neighbor, people. Shouldn't we be excited?”

“This afternoon. People brought boxes. Lots of boxes. Big boxes. Maybe furniture. Maybe treasure.” “Maybe bodies,” Max said enthusiastically. I looked at him. He smiled innocently. “I saw it in Tío Theo’s movie.” Bianna sat a little straighter, Max still trapped in her lap. “The empty house next door?” “Mm-hm,” Issa answered. “The lights are pretty now.” I stared at the glow behind the trees. The house next door had never felt close before. This community was designed so every owner could pretend they didn’t have neighbors, only expensive trees and driveways that were far too long. But tonight, those lights made the distance shrink.

The bed frame knocked against the shared wall the entire time. This afternoon the knock comes just after two. I open the door still in grey sweatpants, no shirt. My neighbour stands there. Mid-thirties, maybe pushing forty, dark hair pulled back loosely, natural face, no heavy makeup. Attractive in a way I couldn’t paint. She lives alone next door. I’ve nodded at her in the hallway a few times. Never more than that. She meets my eyes and doesn’t look away. “I need you to keep it down at night. The walls are thin. I hear everything. It’s a lot for me. I need to sleep too.”

Kamron and Kimia were known cheaters at this game. “Poker is a lot more safe,” Nate said. I sighed. “Nate, how long have we been friends?” “A few months?” “You should know better than to whine,” I told him. He placed his last card in the middle. “I’m out.” “Are you going to try to slap in?” Jeremy asked. Nate shook his head. “Pity.” Jeremy grinned. “When will Jeremy and Saoirse get in?” Kamron asked. Nate smirked. “Tonight. Aunt Nancy is supposed to close on a house tomorrow, and a moving crew will bring their stuff here by next week.”

If Renato wanted to play whatever game this was, he could play it alone, I'm not interested. The next morning, I stepped out of my apartment at the same moment he stepped out of his. Of course the universe just had to play dirty. We nodded at each other. Neither of us spoke. I walked straight to the elevator, refusing to be the one who broke first, and he followed a few steps behind, close enough to notice, far enough to feel like respect. The ride down was quiet. He split off toward the lobby doors the second they opened, and I told myself that was that. One morning. Nothing worth thinking about twice.

I guess you could say she was a house help, but I could tell that she meant so much more to the family. My parents doted on her and did most things on their own anyway, in fact, it seemed like they kept her here as more of a companion than a help. "So, who lives next door?" "Is that Damon Anderson? Yes, well a young man by name of Damon crowther Anderson he visits here once in a while, he lives next door."
