His dry lips fumbled over the words, pale and trembling.
“If I’d known it was Seraphina—I would never have—”
“Shut up.”
Xander’s voice was a low snarl, venomous and shaking.
“You’re not worthy to say her name.”
He turned his back, but the moment he did, his strength vanished like a flame in a blizzard. He collapsed, sinking into the snow as though crushed by a mountain.
“Seraphina…”
He crawled forward, inch by agonizing inch, his hands shaking. Blood streamed from his eyes, mixing with the frost. His lips parted, but all that came out were broken, gasping sounds—choked syllables of her name.
