Every second stretched, heavy and relentless, pressing against my patience until it cracked. I pushed myself harder. Meditation. Reading. Repeating the same exercises over and over until my mind stopped fighting me and started listening. But it wasn’t enough. It didn’t feel like enough. The bond flickered faintly again. Distant. Muted. I exhaled slowly and stood, running a hand through my hair before turning toward Order. “Can you get me a book?” I asked, my voice rougher than I intended. “Something that teaches me how to match Aella’s power.”

I was still inexperienced using Spirit, but my anger and determination seemed to be very suitable motivators. I swore I could hear the blast in my mind, could hear it echoing among the endless stacks and shelves of books. I ground my teeth together as the strange power pulsed through me, and my eyes involuntarily snapped open. I wanted to see her face when I flung her from my mind, and I hoped beyond anything that my blast would leave a mark.

Not now. Closing my eyes, I delved deep within myself, tapping into the wellspring of power that lay dormant. I called upon the very essence of time itself, feeling its currents swirling around me, a potent force waiting to be harnessed.
