I acquired a gossip-tracking system that informed me the world I lived in was actually a book. And I? I was the tragic side character, doomed to have the most miserable fate. The protagonist was Alicia Stone, a fake heiress showered with unconditional love by the Stone Family. After rereading countless times about the Stone Family's ridiculously irrational decisions and my own string of misfortunes, I made up my mind. I would stop hoping for familial love, respect their inevitable bankruptcy, and play along with the plot.

Then she carried the book to the nearest reading table and sat down and opened it without ceremony, because if fate had written her a contract, the least she could do was read the terms. The book assumed considerable prior knowledge, in the way of very old scholarship that considered background context a reader's own problem. But Lena had been reading texts with gaps since she was twelve, filling in what was missing from context and inference, and she worked through the opening chapters with patient, accumulating attention. She arrived at the third chapter — The Convergent Case: When the Soul Holds More Than One Mark — and her reading slowed and became something considerably more personal. S

But he was twenty-four years old, and he was looking at an alien species that the methodology had no words for. "What is the protocol?" Elias asked me. Not asking me to take command, but asking the elder for the precedent. "You don't send a truth reader," I said immediately. "If their emotions turn inward, a truth reader will only hit a wall and fracture. You don't send a warmth reader, because there is no current to read." I looked at the path leading down to the beach. "You send a bridge holder," I said. "A bridge holder doesn't need to read the emotion. A bridge holder only needs to hold the tension between two foreign structures so they don't collapse on each other."
