But the revenants began to rise. Not to attack. Not to feed. To kneel. Row upon row of dark, stitched creatures bowing in the snow— as the rift cracked fully open— and a silhouette stepped through. Broad shoulders. Crown of bone. Light like dying stars bleeding from its outline. Magnus Veyr. Alive. Changed. Wrong. His voice rolled across the snow: “Daughter of the First Blood… Did you really think death could hold me?” Lyra couldn’t breathe. Vale’s grip crushed her hand.

A scroll appeared in its grasp out of nowhere, the paper looking older than time itself. “You will take this,” it rasped. “Or I will carve it into your bones.” Vanessa snarled, stepping forward. “We could kill you where you stand.” The Revenant turned its head, its gaze locking onto her. “Try.” Shadows wrapped around its form like living creatures, pulsing with darkness and a black flame that made the room impossibly daker. I swallowed hard. This thing—this messenger—was made of darkness. We could fight it, but it would not be an easy battle.

The flames struck the Revenant’s chest, but instead of burning, the creature absorbed them, its body glowing as if it had fed on the magic. Sienna paled. “Oh, that’s bad.” We scattered as the creature struck the ground, its impact sending shockwaves through the earth. I barely managed to stay upright. Rael moved fast, throwing a blade that lodged deep in the Revenant’s shoulder. It barely flinched.

She said with a grin. “Oh my god!! You didn’t!” I cried, slapping a hand over my mouth. I knew Amethyst wasn’t a virgin. We had discussed this in the pet store before, but it was still a shock to me. “Of course I did, how could you pass that up? Have you seen Nico? He’s like a fucking god. Shit, they all are. I thought Vampires were attractive, but they have nothing on a Reaver.” She said. “Well you’re not wrong, he is gorgeous. Rowen and all of his brothers are too. It’s like walking into a room filled with Greek gods and their chiseled bodies. We will never be lacking in eye candy.” I said with a laugh.

It came so fast the revenant couldn't even begin to dodge. A deafening boom swallowed the golden sunlight as black energy blotted it out. The revenant's head burst apart under his fist, and the core rune shattered just the same, ground to nothing by chaotic energy. The body went limp and withered in seconds, crumbling to black ash just like the first.
