There’s again a big dome instead of the ceiling, made of tinted glass that’s projecting colorful patterns on the floor. There are three doors at the other end of the room. I follow Archander to the middle door before he opens it and leads me inside to a dark corridor. We start walking and are stopped by a door at the end of the corridor. The door looks huge and there are some things inscribed in gold on it. It has a regal air to it. But Archander doesn’t open that door. Instead, he opens another door which went unnoticed by me. It’s on the left wall, slightly smaller in size. It looks warm and is a shade lighter than the other door.

He smiled at me, encouraging me to follow Lina, while James Turner waved, offering me a warm smile. I followed Lina up the stone steps until we reached an enormous corridor. There were hundreds of doors in the same dark shade. Lina gently guided me through the corridor, passing many of them, and then we climbed another set of stairs. By the time we reached the top, I was already sweating, even though the island's weather was close to winter. We continued through another corridor, illuminated by torches along the walls, and at the end of it stood a large mahogany door in a dark red shade.

She saw words written in red roses on the floor and it read: “Will you marry me?” Her heart was thudding loud in her chest and she felt like if care was not taking, she would faint out of excitement and shock. She ran into the kitchen and saw words written in roses again on the kitchen cabinet: “And be the mother of my unborn kids?” She ran out again to the balcony to find a car parked with a bold note written on it: “I will treat you like a queen you are forever.”

The way he looked at her like she was breakable and already breaking. She walked slowly to the hallway, past the closet, past the bathroom, to the door at the end. The study. She had never been inside. He always kept it shut. It hadn’t mattered before, but now, it throbbed in her mind. A locked door. A secret. Maybe the truth. She hesitated. Then turned the handle. Unlocked. She stepped in. The air was cooler. Dim. The room was small but lined with shelves, books stacked in chaotic towers on the floor and windowsills. A desk sat at the far end, littered with old cameras, a sketchpad, and a glass tumbler with the remnants of whiskey.

Orion simply instructed two guards to remain outside the lower corridor while he, Selene, Kaelen, Theron, Quinlan, and Sable followed the old passage. The corridor was narrow and cool. They passed several doors that had not been opened in years. Dust covered the stone, but the walls remained solid. At the very end stood a plain wooden door reinforced with iron. There was no crest. Only a small keyhole. Selene looked at Kaelen. He nodded. She placed the key inside. It turned easily. The lock clicked. Sable blinked. “That was almost disappointingly simple.” Riven, who had followed despite being told to stay behind, whispered, “Don't say that. You're going to make something happen.”

Ember laughed lightly and Caleb offered his arm with a bow again and they walked down to the ballroom. As they got closer they could hear the chatter and murmurs coming from the crowd. The main doors were closed most of the guests would have arrived through the glass doors from outside or the smaller entrance on the other side. These doors were meant to make a statement. It had an illusion made to look like the sea, with large and small different, colourful fishes. The floor was similar to the ceiling. Anywhere her feet touched would shimmer under her, making her feel like an otherworldly creature. The walls were made to look marbled with black and white colours. There was a sixty-inch television mounted above a small fireplace, right opposite the queen-size bed.

I poked my head around the doorframe out of curiosity. She had shut the main corridor door. Those doors only got locked in an emergency, like a fire or a riot. She had locked me in with Ronan.
