Dale is still driving, his expression unreadable, hands steady on the wheel.
“Where are we?” My voice is weak, barely above a whisper.
“Almost there,” he mutters, eyes locked on the road ahead.
Almost where? I try to focus, try to gather my thoughts, but it’s like holding onto smoke. My body feels like it’s shutting down while my mind is still sprinting, wild and erratic. I blink slowly, my head dipping forward again, and when I force my eyes open, we’re turning down a narrow, unpaved road. Trees loom on either side, thick and dark, swallowing the car as we move deeper into nowhere.
