The view of the lit-up city was stunning in each direction. He reached for my hand. "Let me show you around." Silently, I agreed, following close behind as Nox took me from room to room. The first direction took us to a small hall with three doors. One led to a bathroom. The next led to a small bedroom with a queen-sized bed and other bedroom furniture. The last door opened to a larger bedroom, beautifully decorated in shades of brown and green. The four-poster bed was a California king that dominated the room. Directly across the room was a fireplace with a flat-screened television above. Near the windows showcasing more of the gorgeous city view sat a plush chair with a matching ottoman. C

“Yeah. I just… wanted to know if I should expect any extra cleaning or special requests while they’re here.” She shrugs, tapping at her keyboard. “Well, they didn’t say exactly how long, but they booked the rooms for at least three nights. Could be longer, though.” My stomach twists. Three nights. Maybe more. “Do you know which rooms they’re in?” I ask, keeping my tone light. “Just so I can plan ahead.” She raises an eyebrow but doesn’t seem suspicious. “They’re on the third floor. Rooms 302, 303, and 304. Two of them are next to each other, and the third is across the hall.”

We grabbed takeout from the diner adjacent to the lot, a turkey club for me, roast beef for him, and retreated to Room Seven. It was exactly as depressing as I'd expected. One double bed with a floral spread that had seen better decades, thin brown carpet, a boxy TV, and a bathroom that smelled aggressively of bleach. But it was clean. And when Noah turned the deadbolt, the definitive click made my shoulders finally drop.
