Chapter 18 Scarlett's POV My whole body hurt. I groaned when I shifted and realized I was lying in bed. I was restless rather than angry, which surprised me more than it should have. I lay there for a couple moments, staring at the ceiling, trying to recall last night. Clementina had brought me here last night with an apologetic face when she found me on the balcony railings after Christian… again. I felt uneasy, my mind drifting back to last night. I remembered the angry red marks across his back, the heat of them still lingering on my fingertips. They hadn't looked like ordinary wounds. They'd looked... wrong. What if it got worse or caught an infection?

“She used charms!” Someone shouted, “She seduced him!” Alaric nodded gravely. “She disappeared after the murders. That alone condemns her.” Rage boiled over. “Find her!” “Kill her!” “Make her pay!” Inside, Alaric smiled. “Run all you want, Scarlet,” he thought. “You just became the pack’s favorite fucking scapegoat.” Miles away, deep within the blurry forest Scarlet woke with a violent gasp. Her body jerked upright, breath tearing from her lungs like she’d been drowning. Cold dirt pressed into her palms. Blood crusted along her ribs where healing spells had burned her from the inside out.

The memories were raw, and I could feel them cutting through me like fresh wounds. Martha’s eyes shimmered with regret. “I shouldn’t have helped you that night, Scarlett. I regret it every day,” she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. “I should have trusted my instincts, but I believed you were doomed, that they had lost faith in you.” I shook my head, feeling a sharp pain twist in my chest. What could possibly have changed? “No, Scarlett,” she continued, her voice resolute. “Thirty minutes after I freed you, they came back to the spot. Alpha Maxwell was dressed, fully prepared… I believe they were coming to take you away from Redcape.”

“She just suddenly lost her mind and started cutting everyone off, claiming she couldn’t trust anyone. It’s not my fault the girl is crazy.” Emily raised an eyebrow. She had been witness to the unraveling of Scarlet’s sanity, especially after her marriage to Henry, but she couldn’t bring herself to trust Isabella’s words entirely. “Are you sure you’re not leaving something out?” Emily countered. “Scarlet wouldn’t just cut you off without reason. You must have done something or said something to make her want to cut you off permanently.”

By the time she finished, Scarlet's face was flushed with anger. "This Richard Shaw really has no shame at all!" she roared. "You clawed your way back to death. All you want is a quiet life, but he still chases you down and keeps bothering you! He's like gum you can never get rid of! If he's standing in front of me right now, I'd beat him up!" Warmth spread through Maria's chest. With a friend like this standing up for her, the memories she spoke of no longer felt like something unbearable.
