I nearly killed a man because my wife kept secrets from me. This seems to be the story of my life. We are all living stories. And let's face it — every really good story is far from flat. Everybody loves a juicy tragedy. A frightful thriller. Until, of course, it's their tragedy or their fright. But that's a damn shame because who knows? All of my scary and tragic shit could be prepping me to tell one helluva good story. That's why I belong here. Right here, wherever I am. No, I know. Life sucks, and the shit I am going through is terrible. I'm not denying any of that.

“I thought—God, Nate, I thought I lost you.” My chest tightened. My heart raced. “You didn’t.” My voice was small. Silence hung heavy, broken only by the machine’s beeping. Finally, I whispered, “Why? Why do you even care this much if I’m just your… secret?” His jaw worked. His eyes glistened. “Because you’re not just my secret. You’re—” He stopped, swallowed hard. “You’re the only real thing in my life. And I can’t lose that.”

My eyes darted instinctively to the screen, where the bold text of Estelle’s message dropped down, For a brief moment, I was transported away from the conversation at the table, caught up in the anticipation that Estelle’s message stirred within me. The temptation to respond, to find out what secrets she held, was almost overwhelming. It read: I HAVE A SECRET TO REVEAL TO YOU ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE PERSON. Instead of saying it, I show her how I feel every day. I watch Big Brother with her. We have scary movie night. I hold her hair when she’s puking. That’s love in my books. Only…she’s not been the same recently, and I don’t know how to fix it. I hope she knows I'd do anything for her.
