Vanessa stood frozen in the doorway of the suite. Her hair was wet from the rain outside. Her mascara had started to run. The phone in her hand, the phone with the photo of her and Marcus counting cash, was trembling like she was holding a live wire. "It is you," she whispered again. "You are supposed to be dead." Seraphina stood very still. Damien was between them. On his feet now, his whole body tense like he was about to intercept something coming fast.

It simply smiled, a cruel, unreadable expression. Then, as my power hit it… it shattered. Or at least, that’s what I thought. The figure dissolved into a thousand shards of darkness, each shard slamming into the ground, and I realized with horror: these weren’t fragments. They were seeds. Seeds of shadow, spreading, creeping across the forest floor, twisting, alive… and moving. Toward my pack. Toward the sanctuary. “No!” I screamed, rushing forward, trying to stop them. Marcus, Ethan, Callum, and Davian joined me, their energy blazing, but the shards were fast, multiplying, spreading like wildfire.

“It belongs with its guardian.” I took it. The shard hummed against my palm, a familiar, resonant cold. “And the others? The email said you knew where five were.” He nodded. “The remaining shards… they were scattered long ago, taken as trophies or lost in trades. My sources suggest they’re held in the vaults of several remote packs now. Isolated. Proud. One of them…” He paused, his eyes meeting mine meaningfully. “One of them has had strong ties to the Black Raven pack for generations. A deep alliance.”

Jude frowned. “They weren’t doing that before.” I reached out, feeling a faint vibration under my fingers. “It’s not hostile. It’s… calling.” “Calling?” “Yeah. Like it’s reaching for something beyond this world.” The light brightened, spinning in a spiral before settling into a single beam that shot upward—brief, silent, beautiful. Then everything stilled.
