Gideon chuffs before turning and walking away. “I love you Gideon.” I say to him. “I love you, my daughter.” He says, but he doesn’t turn back. I’m sad all over again at the loss of my family. I shift, intending to go back to my room and lay down. I have some injuries that need to heal after the battle. As soon as I shift, I hear Donovan growl. I turn and see that he’s shifted back, and Clint has positioned himself between me and the other warriors.

And he hums close to her ear, “Wine for your family, phoenix for the trials you have faced and risen from, the fighter is obvious, a shield because you are a protector, and a heart because I love you.” She nods as she takes it all in. Then she holds it out to him, and he takes it and puts it on for her. She smiles up at him,

But something in me warned me to be careful, beneath his handsome face and kind words lies a cold-blooded killer. This could all be a plan, and I knew for a fact that he did not trust me one bit. He could be planning to melt me with his words, and then at the right time, he would strike. I clenched my jaw and looked at him. “Thank you, Fenrir. Adele trembled, her body wracked with sobs as she clutched at the sheets beneath her. "Untamed," Tris muttered as he stepped closer. His hand reached for her bra, yanking it off with a brutal tug that made her wince. Instinctively, she crossed her arms over her chest, trying to shield herself from his gaze. But Tris wasn't having it. He grabbed her wrists with ease, forcing her arms away. "You've being left untamed for far too long." He said his voice low and venomous. " Please don't, please don't." Adele whimpered with tears streaming uncontrollably from her eyes. "Please don't."

he tells me. I look at him in disbelief. We both know that I can suggest that, but she won't agree. "She loves you too now, doesn't she?" he asks me before smacking his hand on a nearby table. "Do you know what you're actually doing? You are selling away your family for the sake of someone else! This is betrayal of the highest form," he says, looking at me. "I expected a lot more from you. You can't have contact with her; it's going to make you soft." "I don't have any cause with destroying the Shadow Fang," I tell him defiantly. But he retorts sharply, "But you have problems destroying it with her in it. And destroying her. She's part of the Shadow Fang."

he continued, “that whatever it is will make me walk away. It won’t. Not now. Not ever.” His grip was warm. “My love for you isn’t a game, Elodie. It’s not some passing emotion I can shut off. I’ve loved you from the moment I saw you all those years ago, and even after everything we’ve been through, I still want you.” Her lips trembled. “Even if it turns out you’ve done the worst imaginable thing, I’m still not letting go. I want to be your shield. Your light. Your man. I don’t want to be apart from you anymore. I want you—only you—for the rest of my life.”

His weary voice fills my bones and I sink to the floor as he does and pull him into my chest. Purposely, I press my chest to his face, and he laughs. “I am glad my heartbeat can comfort you, King Harvey.” He kisses my clothed chest and I shiver, keeping my eyes on the bubbling pot of lava. This is no place for loving making. I do still need a shield. King Harvey stands up and helps me up. He places the shield in both my hands, and I hold onto it for less than a minute. Handing it back to him as my arms shake at the weight, I know this is only a shield for decoration.

He reached out, and grabbed hold of something with his hands. He turned and held it up, high above his head, as he faced the others. As he did, they all bowed down low to the ground. It was a shield. It was a large, golden shield, and it was glowing, light radiating off of it. It pulsed and vibrated and turned colors, as if it were coming to life.

A soft murmur of approval rippled through the pack. “My second vow is one of protection,” he continued, his voice gaining a harder, fiercer edge. “I will be the shield that guards you from all harm. I will be the sword that strikes down any who wish you ill. My strength is yours, my life for yours, from this moment until my last breath.” His eyes, blazing with intensity, softened into something deeper, more intimate.

His name caught in my throat as I whispered, “What if you’re the fuel?” He closed the distance between us before I could blink, his hands cradling my face, his touch burning but steady. “Then I’ll burn gladly,” he said, voice low, eyes fierce. “I’ll burn before I ever let it take you.” My heart twisted painfully at the devotion in his words—at the way his love had become both shield and blade. I wanted to believe we were strong enough to defy whatever darkness waited, but the shard pulsed again, answering something unseen. It felt almost like laughter beneath my skin.
