I cut the stream short, the screen going black mid-sentence. The silence that followed was suffocating, my heart was still hammering when I heard it, footsteps outside. Slow, deliberate, too close to be chance, my head snapped toward the door, every muscle locking, a shadow slid across the narrow strip of light under the frame, stretching long, unmoving, waiting, my breath caught. My hands shook as I scrambled to shut off the lamp, plunging the room into darkness. I crouched low, frozen, begging silently for the sound to fade.

"With cameras on every corner, Charles won't be able to hide for long. He's bound to be caught any minute now." Olivia had barely hung up when a loud knock rattled my door. I did not bother opening it. Instead, I peered through the digital peephole and saw the unmistakable silhouette. "Charles, I can see you out there. Don't mess up again. Turn yourself in, and maybe you can get a second chance," I called out. The knocking grew fiercer as Charles heard me. He was cursing up a storm, but I tuned him out, still pushing for him to give up.

"If I were her, I'd probably pretend to be mute and stay silent for years too. That voice is enough to make anyone want to gouge their own ears out!" My desk was kicked over, sending all the books scattering across the floor. Alice yanked my hair hard, then she raised her hand and slapped me across the face. "I'm talking to you, Summer! Your mute act is over, and now you're deaf? Can't hear anyone, right?" I shoved her with all my strength. "Let go of me!"

Rainee's always been timid. She's scared of the dark. Thunder terrifies her. Whenever there was a storm, she'd grab her stuffed bunny and come to my room. "After all these years, sleeping next to her on rainy nights just became a habit. That doesn't mean I loved her..."

But Maya was beside her, back turned, breathing slow and steady. The sound came again. From the direction of the cupboard. Aria’s mouth went dry. She did not move. Did not sit up. She kept her eyes half closed, pretending to be still asleep. Inside the cupboard, hidden behind hanging clothes, he stood perfectly still. He had been there long before they checked earlier.
