A soft breeze carried the scent of flowers from somewhere, maybe a garden around the back.
It was peaceful out here, quieter than I expected, and we just moved through it slowly. For a few minutes, we didn’t speak. We just listened to the wind, the birds, the distant hum of traffic beyond the hospital walls.
And then, out of nowhere, he broke the silence.
“I think it’s time we end everything.”
My hands froze on the wheelchair handle. I stood still behind him, the wheels softly creaking as they came to a stop. “What do you mean?” I asked carefully, stepping around so I could see his face.
