He giggled, a sweet, tinkling sound that filled the air. “He likes to play hide-and-seek with me,” he said, his eyes sparkling with mischief. “Oh, I bet he does,” I said, my heart warming at his playful nature. “And what do you like to do?” He looked at me, his blue eyes filled with a depth that surprised me. “I like to learn things,” he said, his voice serious. "And I like to help people."

He barked excitedly, his tail smacking Maeve repeatedly in the face. "Ow!" she squeaked, shielding herself from the attack. Duck bounded past us, zooming across the sand in a wide circle at least three times. Robbie watched in delight, clapping his hands as Duck did a fourth circle, kicking sand in his wake. "Something's wrong with that thing," I said, reaching down and ruffling Maeve's hair just to annoy her. She swatted my hand away. "What did you call him? Did you say Duck?" "Yeah, that's his name."

I could see the warmth behind her eyes. "Of course it is," she replied. I returned her answer with a smile, focusing my attention back to Hope. She had her small arms engulfed round my neck with her head bobbing up and down, as she explained all the times she had fed the 'duckies' with mommy. I took every word in. Listening, and devoting all my time to her. I always loved children, so this wasn't scary to me. If anything I was in my element. "Look at that one! That ones big! Mommy look!!" She wiggled her index finger, shouting as loud as her two year old lungs could allow her, as she became fascinated with a swan.

It was indeed from Byron, but the message read, "Something came up at work. I won't be home tonight." Right after that, Claire sent me a video. Byron was in the hospital, head bowed as he peeled an orange for her, his gaze tender. The caption read, "I'm the one Byron loves. An ugly duckling is forever an ugly duckling. You'll never become a swan."

There were 7 ducks that she could see so far, the big, mama duck waddling ahead of them and her little duckling trailing behind her. She had though it was a myth before, ducks travelling in a V. Well, not she had at least seen it for herself. She made a mental note to show up at the pond again tomorrow, but with breadcrumbs so she could feed them.
