I was too drained to care. I went straight to class and dropped into my seat, pulling out my notebook. The door opened. Our teacher stepped in—and behind him was Liam. “Good morning class” the teacher greeted. Liam walked over calmly and sat next to me. Here's a revised version: "Hey," he said softly. "Uh... hi," I replied, not sure how to act. Class started, but I couldn’t stop noticing him next to me. At one point, he leaned closer. “Do you mind helping me later?” he whispered. “I’m still catching up. Maybe we could partner for the history project.”

“Sorry…huh, I’m Aria… Aria Beaumont.” “It’s okay. My surname is really Purple. I think that’s how I got to like the color. Fits me, doesn’t it?” Maureen said, a smile on her face. “Hmm. It does.” Aria said, warming up to her. ALL STUDENTS SHOULD GATHER AT THE AUDITORIUM IN FIVE MINUTES The voice from the sound system interrupted their bonding session and they both left the room in a hurry. They reached the auditorium and a whole lot of students were there, waiting for the administrator. Aria and Maureen joined the other students and sat down.

Chapter 9: A Glimpse of Hope The atmosphere in Lucas Thorne's office was remarkably quiet, the type of silence that seemed to weigh down on the chest. Perched high above the bustling city, the space was a serene escape from the commotion below. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls offered a stunning view of the skyline, allowing sunlight to flood the room by day and city lights to twinkle at night. The office was elegantly furnished with a simple touch featuring a dark wood desk, sleek black leather chairs, and tidy shelves filled with files and awards.

“Watching that mess, I decided that letting people in was pointless.” That honesty hung in the space between them. She asked quietly, “So you cut people off?” He tried joking. “Not exactly a monk. I dated. Never stayed long.” She let the quiet linger. “And now?” Keller looked right at her. Something shifted. She felt it in her chest. “I don’t want to make those mistakes again,” he said softly. Her heart thumped. She knew exactly what he meant. All at once the space between them was too small—electric.

After they left the coffee shop, both of them understood that they were trapped in the space between suspicion and certainty. And I looked at her. And the distance between us, which had been fourteen months and then twelve years and then thirty hours of driving and then three days in Las Cruces and then three weeks of phone calls and one week of the most significant events of both our lives, that distance collapsed into the specific ordinary miracle of two people standing in the same space at the same time. I walked toward her. She walked toward me.
