The Tenth Victim Novels & Stories

Graham suddenly opened his eyes and sat up, covered in cold sweat. It was still dark out, and Leanna was lying next to him in deep sleep, her breathing regular. He gasped loudly and greedily, feeling his heart thumping wildly in his chest. His dream was just too vivid. It felt as though they had all actually happened in real life. He closed his eyes again, and the memories flooded his mind once more. It wasn't a dream. He recalled everything. He finally recalled everything that had happened. He was drunk and out of his mind that night because someone had drugged him. Then, he'd gone home and raped Gwyneth. Meanwhile, Leanna stood outside the door and witnessed everything that happened.

Andrews informed her and turned on the TV. "The two victims appeared to have suffered the same fate as all the other victims found earlier. According to the police, whoever or whatever is doing this is not human. These victims have what looks like a snake bite on the shoulder, and their blood is completely drained. This numbers up to a total of six victims found in similar situations," came the voice of the female reporter on the TV. Andrews slowly shifted his gaze to Jessica, not listening to the rest of the news, "Jessica?" "What! So I picked a few humans; it's no big deal," Jessica replied nonchalantly and sipped her wine.

And the last words of the nurse broke him completely. It was official, Miles Theo, the blond guy with round frame glasses, and prettiest curvy body, full of innocence and purity is gone. Even my parents, who always doted on me, admitted that he was nicer to me than anyone else. But he died after we got into a car accident. He risked his life to protect me.” I listened to her description in silence. “I couldn’t sleep for countless nights and nearly collapsed. My life was filled with sorrow for a year before his mistress suddenly approached me. She came with his child and requested a share of his property.”

"I'm glad he's dead. He had it coming. He deserved it!" The call ended. Seraphine was expressionless as if it didn't concern her at all. Lowering her head, she tidied up the stuff in her bag. Having overheard part of the conversation, Seraphine's assistant said carefully, "It's been a decade, Seraphine. Many things could've happened in those years. I guess that's the way life goes. My condolences." Seraphine didn't say a word, and her expression was blank. She simply stood where she was, watching Rose wail and sob through the glass window of the ward.

" I told him that you don't get to act like the victim here and try to escape. I spat as I coughed violently, "You assaulted me, and God knows how many you killed on your way up here! I don't care if you are the heir apparent of this shithole you and your type constructed of this country. You are not the victim here! I am!!!" Aric froze in place and seemed at a loss for what to say. Now that my poison was gone, I had nothing but the door behind me to keep me from collapsing. As I slumped to the floor, breathing heavily, I barely registered Aric's arms grabbing me before the room began to blur in and out.

“No.” Her voice was flat, emotionless, but it sent a chill down my spine. “Okay,” I said, raising my hands slightly. “I was just asking—” “You’re the tenth,” she said abruptly, cutting me off. I blinked. “Excuse me?” “You’re the tenth,” she repeated, her gaze unwavering. “The tenth girl he’s chosen.” I stared at her, unsure of what to say. “And soon enough,” she continued, her tone dropping to something almost sinister, “you’ll be dead like the others. I don't need to create small talk with people wjo are already dead.”

But her mother had died in childbirth, and no records of her father could be found. Leo tried to comfort me, saying Mom and Dad were just overly suspicious because of their professions, but they still loved me. But I knew I had always been an outsider in this family. Soon, the police released their findings on the case. The victim was a young woman, around 20 years old. Her body bore signs of abuse and her face had been smashed in with a blunt object, leaving it unrecognizable. She had suffered 40 stab wounds. All ten of her fingernails had been forcibly removed.

I shouldn’t be surprised since the police have probably already tried looking for a pattern like this, but it’s irritating nonetheless. Feeling as if my eyes are threatening to cross themselves, I decide to divert my attention to the victims themselves. I decide to start off by compiling a list, and working from there. To start with the basics, for now I just write down each victim’s name, in the order that they were killed.
