I adjusted my clothes and quietly said, “Chris, I’m so tired.” A few days ago, the doctor had told him to make peace with it and just be with me in my final days. Chris threw a fit. He insisted on transferring me to another hospital and demanded to find the best doctors to treat me. All the chaos gave me a headache. I asked him, “Do you really want me to suffer?” He froze, then weakly said no. He said he just wanted me to be comfortable, to be happy, and to give him another chance.

Every decision I’d made echoed back at me—who I’d saved, who I hadn’t, who I’d lost along the way.
