The nurse hurried to me and held my hand. Chuck was rough; he showed no sign of being gentle with me. In the past, he would've been agonized if I'd so much as scratched my hand. "Stop screaming. I should know how painful this is since I've done it so many times. Why have I never realized how good you are at faking these things?" The white lights on the ceiling blinded me, making my eyes water. I slowly shut them. I could feel the child leaving my body, but the pain in my heart had long surpassed that of my body. The lower half of my body was numb, but my heart still felt like it was being repeatedly stabbed.

She carries pain like a crown, and I’ve spent my whole life surrounded by people who wear their wounds that way. “Sometimes,” I begin, my voice softening despite myself, “we’re so blinded by hurt that we can’t even see the truth right in front of us. And we may spend the rest of our lives wondering if we actually took that path to find out what really happened... what would have been the outcome?” Her lips part slightly, her brow furrowed, the confusion there, the shock, it hits me harder than I expect. “That’s my work,” she whispers, her voice trembling. “Velvet Lies.”

But Martin had seen. “Go back to her,” Martin whispered, voice cracking like thin ice. “That’s where you belong.” Pain flashed raw in Damien’s eyes—quick, unguarded. He exhaled through his nose, stepped back. Turned toward the door. At the threshold he paused, hand on the knob. “The truth will come out,” he said quietly. “When it does… don’t run.” The door clicked shut. Martin sank to the floor, back against the wall, head in his hands. Rain kept falling. His pulse thundered in his ears.

But it was true. It was a curse I had nothing to do with but to accept. Someone had said the truth--The truth hurts. In fact, It kills you inside without even letting your screams reach out, without letting the pain creep out. It leaves the cracks everywhere that you can't mend and it slowly kills you inside until you can't feel yourself anymore.

“These two have been meeting in barns for months. Vivian threw herself at Vince and ruined our relationship.” "Lie!" Perry looked at Kathleen in disbelief. "How dare you call my daughter a liar!" It was Judd Randall who stepped to his daughter's side. He was a retired general of the Calvary, and still carried his body straight and proud despite his permanent injuries. He knew of his daughter’s indiscretion and condition, he had supported her idea to tell Vince. After all the father had a right to know. After this, though, he would not support a forced marriage. There were other ways to go about this. His sharp yes shushed Kathleen.

Now he was saying, "Isn't this the perfect solution?" My heart felt like it was being burned by that fire all over again, the pain so intense that I could barely breathe. Just then, the baby girl in my arms suddenly began coughing violently. Her little face turned bright red before she spat up a mouthful of blood-tinged milk. "Something's wrong with the baby!" someone screamed. Brooke lunged toward me like a madwoman, her voice sharp enough to shatter glass. "Emma! If you have a problem, come at me! Why are you hurting my child?"

Vivian's face turned purple; she scratched his hand with both her hands, unable to break free. "You used my sympathy, gained my trust through deception, and hurt the person I cared about most." Damian's words were cold, his murderous intention thick. "Did you really think you could keep on toying with the Silvermoon Pack?" Vivian's tears and mucus mixed as she struggled and screeched in agony. "Damian, please let me go, I was wrong! I'll never do it again! Please, just give me another chance! I swear I won't lie again!"

she said, more certainly now. I didn't deny it, and that was enough. Her expression shifted, the realization not fully formed but close enough to unsettle her. “Everyone around you always get hurt, isn't it?" She said, not looking up at me. The words settled deeper than they should have, striking something I had long learned to ignore, and for a brief moment my hand curled into a fist, not out of anger toward her, but because she had said something I could not deny. She stood slowly, her eyes already red. "Nardo…” she called and paused.
