Wait, are we sure it's Simon Vance for every version? I could have sworn I downloaded one years ago that had a different narrator... maybe it was an abridged version or something.

I tried the audiobook after reading the paperback years ago. For me, it highlighted different aspects. When reading, I got lost in Anne Rice's lush, descriptive prose, able to linger on a sentence about a cathedral or a dress. The audiobook's pace is set, so you can't stop to savor that. However, hearing the words spoken aloud made the emotional beats hit harder—Lestat's loneliness, his fury at Magnus. It's a more visceral, less intellectual experience. I'd say the audiobook is fantastic for a re-read, but purists might want to encounter that dense, atmospheric prose on the page first to build the world in their own mind.

To my knowledge, all the current digital and CD editions in circulation are unabridged. The older, out-of-print cassette versions from the 80s or 90s might be a different story. But anything you download or stream today is almost certainly the whole book. It's become the standard for major backlist titles. They know listeners investing that much time want the authentic experience. With 'The Vampire Lestat', that means every last detail about the Parisian vampires, Armand's coven, and Lestat's complicated relationship with his own nature.
