She was still kneeling, her face red and blotchy, her hair a wild mess, but her voice dripped venom. “You’ll pay. Both of you. I swear it on my blood.”
Caroline laughed, short and sharp, wiping the last of her tears from her cheek. “You’ve already lost, Alisa. Maybe try accepting it instead of choking on it.”
The last grains of sand slid through the hourglass, the silver dust spilling into nothingness. The humming in the walls grew louder, the stone itself trembling like it was exhaling.
