They were meant for the thing inside my belly. After asking around and digging deeper, I finally learned what Emily had done to me. She had cast a blood curse on me. Unable to conceive, she had somehow produced a stillborn fetus in her own womb. That dead fetus had attached itself to my baby, draining his life force. Those absurd, unsettling voices had been deliberately fed to me by Emily through that thing. In my last life, both my child and I died on the operating table. The stillborn fetus in her womb stole my son's destiny.

The moment it disconnected, the monitors flashed red—then a symbol appeared. Cipher’s insignia. A spiral of code pulsing like a heartbeat. “Enzo…” I muttered. He turned—and froze as the screens came alive with static. A distorted voice filtered through the speakers. “Too predictable, Aristide. Just like your father.” I gritted my teeth. “Show yourself.” “You already saw me,” the voice said. “You just don’t know it yet.” Then the connection cut. “Move!” Enzo yelled. “Charges planted in the walls!”

Until now. I felt eyes on me. I couldn’t pinpoint where exactly the eyes were at the moment, but they were there watching. This was different. I stood, dusting my jeans off; entering the field. “Come, brother or sister, let us reminisce, and enjoy some food and laughter,” I said, stopping and turning myself in a circle. I had never spoken to lure a forbidden out before, but times, as everyone was so apt to say, were changing. “You are not my sister.” The voice was shrill, and raspy at the same time.

I wondered why she did that but she immediately took her phone from her bag. "Why? What's the problem?" I asked, confused. "The new cover song by VnM will be released now," she said happily. So she's one of my listeners? I secretly smiled. This time, it looks like I'll let her know about my secret. After all, she's my friend. "You know what Vienna, you have the same voice," she added but she wasn't looking at me. "I'm VnM," I shortly replied making her stop from walking. She covered her mouth and looked at me in shock.

A sliver of my true scent—frost and ozone, sharp and angry—escaped into the air between us. Matteo took an involuntary step back, his eyes widening slightly. He’d felt it. The power in it. The threat. “I am not a sickness,” I said, my voice dangerously quiet. “I am an Enigma. And my presence here is sanctioned by the Global Alliance and your own government. If you have a problem with that, take it up with them. Now, if you’ll excuse me, the break is over.” I walked past him, back into the meeting room. My heart was pounding, but my hands were steady. Matteo’s words echoed in my head. He’s falling apart.

I tried to take a step back, but my feet seemed rooted to the spot. The man's presence was overwhelming, and I found myself struggling to tear my gaze away from him. He seemed too powerful to be just an Alpha, or even a Special Alpha like Damien. Then who was he, really? Was he…an Enigma? The most powerful beings of our race…the ones who are born so special that they are hardly seen or heard of anymore? But why would an Enigma be here? Working as a doctor? Or perhaps he was a scientist? I couldn’t tell…

I strained my ears, desperate to catch even the faintest hint of her voice amidst the cacophony of destruction. Then, like a siren’s call cutting through the madness, I heard it—a familiar voice, faint but unmistakable, crying out my name. “Enzo!” My heart leapt into my throat as I whirled around, my gaze darting through the smoke-shrouded haze in search of the source of the familiar voice. “Nina!” I shouted, my voice cracking with a combination of desperation and the soot I had inhaled. “I’m here! Where are you?”

ENZO’S POV Darkness held me under for what felt like forever. Then voices drifted in, soft at first, like echoes from a distant shore. One voice cut through clearer than the rest. Elena’s voice. She called my name over and over, gentle but urgent, pulling me upward through layers of pain and fog. “Enzo… please wake up. Come back to me.”

"I was making Dua after offering the prayer when I read your message. I got devasted. You are the only person I talk to. I would die with despair if you stop talking to me." The voice note kept on playing again and again. The heavy rain was pouring outside. The thunder was rumbling. The window of the room was open and curtains were flying back and forth creating a strange sound in the quietness of the room. "I was making Dua ---" the voice note started playing once again when Yara angrily threw her phone away and the voice stopped.

He ran a frustrated hand through his hair. “The bastard uses some sort of encryption and a voice-disguising device. Every time the call connects, it’s the same voice, but it’s not his authentic voice. My team has been working on it for months, trying to track the location of the number, but the signal bounces across three different continents before it hits my line.” I stared at him, my heart beginning to hammer against my ribs. “If you don’t know who they are… why are they calling you? What do they want?”
