All I can do is wait and wait until Liam does send me a message. I reach for my book on the bedside cabinet, I’m an avid reader but tonight I open it up and just stare at the pages. So unlike me, especially when it’s the a Colleen Hoover like this one is. Really, I’m not even able to focus on the words, they’re swimming in front of my eyes. Perhaps I ought to swap to an audio book, that might soothe me whilst I wait.

The book was published in March, on a morning that was cold and grey in the way March mornings were. Serena stood in her study and didn't know what to do with her hands. It was not a small, quiet book. There was no possibility of it being small or quiet — not with what was in it, not with the years that sat behind it. I, on the other hand, was coming up here to pass time. Today was the day that Sarah and I were going shopping. I was looking forward to spending time with her and seeing what kind of person she was. I actually felt bad that it took a year for us to do something like this. Sarah told me that she was going to pick me up from school at 3:30. I had an hour to spare, so I decided to go up to the library to wait. I walk over to the reading books section and took up a book to read. The book that I chose was Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. This was one of my favourite books, so I know it will help me pass the time. I took a seat at a table by myself and began to read.

I picked up the book and held it in both hands and thought about a man at a bookstore counter in October asking Carol for something specific and Carol disappearing for thirty seconds and coming back with exactly the right thing. I thought about page forty-seven. About active patient waiting. About ten days. Then I put the book in my apron pocket, close to where my heart was doing its complicated thing, and went back to work. There was always work to do. And work, this January, was the thing holding the ten days together until they became something else entirely.
