Calder watched the guard watch him, and for a moment their gazes intersected: predator and instrument, each reflecting the other. Outside, somewhere in the town’s indifferent light, the partner went about the household chore of disposal—milk into the sink, container rinsed, a muted, domestic clean-up. In that tiny, quiet act was a verdict.
