It was at that point that he realised something. The Watchers were strong – immeasurably so. They were much stronger than anything Mane had ever come into contact with – with the exception of their ‘gatekeeper’. That’s right. The forest no longer felt silent. It felt awake. The First Guardian stood at the center of the clearing, every muscle tense. Its ears twitched. Its eyes scanned the trees. “They’ve crossed the boundary.” Kael drew his blade. “Who’s crossed?” The Guardian’s voice became little more than a growl. “The Watchers.” Lucien’s expression darkened. “They should still be sleeping.” Elara looked between them. “What are the Watchers?” No one answered. I said. Marcus tapped his keyboard, pulling adjacent feeds. The figure had lingered longer than chance. Their gaze slid from the building to the street, then back again, slow and methodical. “Not ours,” Marcus confirmed. “No ID, no comms.” Something knotted inside me. They weren’t random. I sent two shadow men—clean, careful. “No engagement unless they hand off something,” I ordered. Minutes dragged. The watcher didn’t fidget, didn’t shift their weight, didn’t act like a man waiting on a cab. This was a practiced sentinel.
