The mist grew thicker, obscuring our vision and muffling our footsteps.
"Stay close," I said, my eyes darting between the shadows. "And keep your weapons ready."

We hadn’t gone far when the first creature appeared.
It started as a low growl, so faint I almost dismissed it as the wind. But then it grew louder, closer, until it reverberated through my chest.
“Do you hear that?” Sophie whispered, her bowstring taut.
Before I could answer, something lunged out of the mist—a hulking mass of fur and teeth. It was a wolf, but twisted beyond recognition. Its eyes burned like molten gold, and its body was covered in patches of matted fur and oozing wounds.
