Of how she often wore her hair in the style I did now, no one else in the kingdom daring such a simple look. I finished quickly, just as my guardian had instructed, silently following him down the winding halls on the castle; my mind replaying the strange glint in his eye over and over. Unable to let the unnatural feeling that plagued my every thought go. I would have to find the meaning behind it somehow. Behind the predatory hunger that moulded into his actions on occasion, changing his behaviour in a drastic and chaotic manner. Perhaps he had a secret of his own, something that he did not wish to share. Not even with me.

She climbed the steps, crossed the threshold, and tried to ignore the way the wolf inside her went completely, inexplicably alert. Just adrenaline, she told herself. Just the territory. Just being back. She kept walking. End of Chapter One.

Her mother sat next to her, reading aloud from an old, faded book. “Once upon a time there lived a girl who was loved by everyone who looked at her, but most of all by her grandmother...” Janice blinked her eyes bringing her back to the present. She was not the least bit surprised to find she was wearing a red cloak and its hood pulled up over her newly cut hair. “At least you're not a spider.” She derided the wolf. “There isn't even a spider in the story.” The wolf chuffed once as if in frustration, and then began to speak.

Nick barked once, signaling the next phase. The run. The atrium doors were thrown open, and the cold night air washed in, crisp with pine and starlight. The moon was high, luminous, bright enough to paint the ground in silver. Perfect for a first run. Without hesitation, I leapt from the Wolf Rock, landing lightly on all fours. Wolves parted for me, bowing slightly as I passed, and my chest tightened with the weight of the honor. Then— I ran. The pack surged after me in a tidal wave of fur and sound. Paws pounded against the earth as we spilled out of the community center and into the forest a few yards behind, dozens of wolves racing under the moon.

he inquired. I anticipated this moment, yet I felt unprepared. "Perhaps it's best if you don't get to know me, pup," I responded. In an instant, he was beside me, and I slumped into the nearest chair, bewildered by his boldness. I vanished and reappeared behind him, causing him to turn and smile. "I believe you've deceived me long enough, don’t you agree?" he said, stepping closer, prompting me to retreat. I should simply disappear back home; why was I still engaging with this insistent wolf? "That's enough of this. I never deceived you; if anything, I've always fulfilled your wishes," I asserted, hoping he would abandon this charade.

When compared to the ones that come with it, that's a bit thin. She took it in her hands and glanced at it. "Perhaps I'll read this first," she thought to herself before settling into a chair on the bedside table. As soon as she opened the first page, she was immediately drawn to the subject matter. "Silver Wolf: The Beginning of a New Era." A tear appeared on one side of the page when she moved the page. No, all of the other pages is a messed. She returned to the opening page of the book, where she was greeted by the name of the book's author.

I never felt safe enough to hold on to something as delicate as tranquility. I turned my focus inward, searching for where my wolf resided deep within my soul. She stirred at my presence, lifting her head just enough to meet my gaze before curling back into herself. She folded her body into a quiet ball. I stepped forward and lowered myself onto her. The softness of her fur enveloped me. Her fur was as impossibly light as clouds; it was white where the light touched and deep gray where shadows pooled. I couldn't stop watching as her fur shifted and rolled in quiet contrast.

He looked at the book as though it were a complicated legal document. "Do you even know this story?" I whispered to him. "I know how to read." "That wasn't my question." His eyes narrowed slightly and I grinned. For a moment, he looked as though he wanted to argue. Instead, he leaned back against the headboard. "Read the story, Zara." I opened the book. It was a tale about a little wolf who was afraid to enter the forest because she believed every shadow concealed a monster. Eventually, she discovered that the forest was full of creatures who were frightened of the dark for different reasons, and together they learned to help one another.
