“Be real. What are you even doing here? Shouldn't you be home feeding a baby or folding laundry or something?" Amelia turned her eyes on the last speaker, her gaze cold enough to freeze the air. A slow, sharp smile tugged at her lips. "Who decided women don't belong at this table? Who said we all belong at home, feeding babies and changing diapers? Who the hell made you the boss of what women can or can't do?" In Amelia’s book, if a woman had the strength and courage to stand her ground, she could do whatever the hell she pleased. “Then I will see everything. If I’m going to write this book like it’s real, then I need to see it all.” Demitri watches me carefully, studying my face. “You do realize most women, in these situations, are only shown the bare minimum?” I tilt my head, feeling curious. “I thought so. I thought the Don or the men running these organizations kept the darkness hidden from their women.”

The thought made her pulse quicken, like she was holding a secret that wasn’t meant to be found. She hesitated only a moment before sitting cross-legged on the floor and flipping the cover open. Inside, in messy handwriting, was a title scrawled across the first page: “Collected Stories — From Women, For Women.” Chloe blinked. The handwriting was feminine, rushed, and almost secretive. She turned the page and read the introduction, scrawled in looping letters:

I asked as I slid into my seat. “Not yet,” she laughed. “Which one is this book? Another werewolf mate at first sight then rejected?” I giggled. “Don’t knock my rejection novels!” Rose glared at me, but it was without heat. “How come the wolf that gets rejected is either female or gay? Why can’t the female reject the male first?” I asked. She shrugged. “Probably because they’re mostly written by women who’ve experienced rejection in real life, and they write their dreams of becoming powerful.”

“I don’t know. You keep everything in such good condition. I’m almost afraid to touch anything in this room.” “I know you’ll be careful with my things.” She nodded and pulled the book off the shelf. “I didn’t know you liked Jane Austen.” “Why not?” She shrugged. “She’s a woman author.” “I’m broad minded enough to think women have a lot to offer society. I enjoy her work.” “This is one of my favorite books. Sense and Sensibility. The story of two sisters who represent two opposing forces: logic and emotion.” He leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms. He seemed to be considering her analysis of the book. “I didn’t think anyone else in Virginia understood that.”

“That's what society thinks. They portray women as these weak creatures that they could easily prey on.” “What I hate the most, is how these books don't change. I mean, women do need men. That's how it works, that's how we live. We werewolves also need our mate. But the storyline is always the same,” I said. “She's always the weak female lead who needs a man to save her or pull her out of her shell. It's pathetic.” “That's what makes the female gender attractive to them I think.” “The fact that they like us dumb or the fact that they know some of us are just stupid?”
