The woman was my heroine in more than one sense; she had a confidence that hardly anyone else possessed. "Alright, you puritan, but before you go, three more books about werewolves in love came in. You can add them to your list of borrowed books," she added with a triumphant smile. "Oh, my God! You're terrible..." "And you adore me for it. I already registered them in the system for you and left them under the cabinet where you keep your stuff." "Thanks, Kendra." "Not just thanks; give me an extended review with all the details about what happens in them, and we won't have any problems."

“But aligned. Structurally. Functionally.” Her pulse picked up. “That doesn’t make sense.” The woman stepped forward again, reading the data herself now. “It does,” she said quietly. No one spoke. Because the tone had changed. Not discovery. Confirmation. Evelyn’s voice dropped. “Explain.” The woman didn’t look at her. She looked at Damian. “You weren’t meant to forget everything.” Damian’s jaw tightened. “I didn’t forget. I was never told.” “That’s not how this works.”

"They were the ones who changed. I'm the one who continues." --- The book was published in the fall. The House of Stories, it was called. A collection of fragments — memories, letters, imagined conversations — all of them about the women who had lived and loved in this house by the sea. The reviews were kind. Not universal — but kind. People recognized the honesty, the vulnerability, the refusal to let the past disappear. This is not a sequel, one critic wrote. It's a meditation. On love, on loss, on the small acts of staying that make a life.

The reviews began arriving on Thursday. Patricia Osei had told me to read them but not to organize my understanding of the book around them because the book had been written for the women in the long middle and the women in the long middle were not the reviewers. The reviewers were the first room the book passed through on its way to the people it was for. The first review I read was from a literary publication that described the book as unflinching and specific and written with the particular authority of someone who had lived inside the thing she was describing rather than observing it from outside.

A king losing a kingdom. A mother singing a lullaby. A lonely boy finding friendship. ⸻ Stories. ⸻ Nothing but stories. ⸻ Yet they felt more important than galaxies.

“Few women do.” “Oh, they do. They’re just afraid to admit it. Yeah, equal pay for equal work and our bodies our selves and Gloria Steinem and all that jazz...but in that dusty dark little corner of every woman’s heart where we keep our maps of Tierra del Fuego lives the hunger to fetch a powerful man his slippers on her hands and knees.” Eleanor was pleased to see her words had a similar effect on Daniel as his did on her. His breath quickened just slightly as his hands deliberately stroked the leather binding of the book in his hand.

A girl asked behind Imogen. "I was just looking around" She answered. "Alright, take your time, miss" The girl smiled and left. Imogen wandered around the bookstore, looking at every shelf for a book to read until her eyes found one. "Longing For A Woman" She called out and reached for it, but a voice stopped her and took it before she could. "Longing For A Woman, written by Emma stones, is a story that tells the tale of two women falling in love and parting," A man said while Imogen moves back, a bit uncomfortable.

, Amelia burst out in anger. “Now that I’m out of that hell hole house and have mentally snapped out of the abusive marriage, I too cannot fathom how I tolerated him for so long. Maybe it’s a lack of self worth fuelled by constant criticism about my looks which made me suffer blame and abuse everyday. Many women like me who are not pretty, continue in abusive relationships thinking that they do not deserve the handsome men they have as husbands, and these abusive husbands exploit the vulnerabilities of people like us for their personal gain”, Sarah said sadly.

I'd never met more dramatic yet detailed women. I don't think they cared much about the book they were reviewing. They all had a copy of it laying face down on their laps, but all they seemed to be able to talk about was… gossip. Very interesting gossip, in fact. I had no idea who Amelia Robinson was, but as I carried out a batch of freshly baked biscuits, I found myself lingering a little longer just so I could hear the reason why her third boyfriend in the last four months had run off again. The women guffawed at their own jokes. They were dramatic, but certainly not pretentious. Here, they let down their guards and simply enjoyed the feel of being with their ‘girls’.

"Sam, right?" The second grabs the first woman. "Look." My wolf looks down at her hands. Wolf claws are out and her growl vibrates the floor. "Anna…” The second woman's eyes go wide. The beast runs at them, striking one in the face with her claws. The other jumps on its back, trying to subdue it, but it's too strong. "Noooo! Stop!!!" I bang on the wall of my mind as I watch the beast attack the women. "Alexi! Run!" The women grab the book they were reading and run for the door.
