The absurdity of it—that I'm having a career crisis while staring at a sleeping cat—almost makes me laugh. Almost. I duck inside, shaking off rain, and the owner barely glances up from her register. It's warm and quiet, smelling like old paper and coffee. I wander through the stacks, not looking for anything specific, just needing to be somewhere that isn't a hotel room or Damien's orbit. My hand lands on a book about women who changed careers in their thirties. I pull it out, flipping through pages of stories about lawyers who became farmers, executives who became teachers, women who chose passion over prestige and somehow survived.

She huffs at us, rolling her eyes before pinning us with a firm stare. "Women write these books. You want to learn how to sweep a woman off her feet? There's your manual." She says, motioning towards the book in my lap. I look at the novel with a newfound respect before looking around the room. "Seriously?" I ask and the women all nod. "Oh yeah. I'd love for my husband to read some of these books. Maybe we could spice things up a little." A woman says and many others nod their heads in agreement. "Oh hell yes. Maybe get him to growl and call you a good girl." Another says with a giggle. My eyebrows shoot up in surprise and the younger girl looks at us with amusement.

“Why aren’t you reading that at home in peace and quiet?” The woman glanced at me over the rim of her glass, her eyes a piercing green that seemed to reflect the neon lights flashing around us. “The noise helps,” she replied, taking a sip of her drink. “It reminds me that reality is always there, no matter how much I try to escape into fiction.” I tilted my head, curious. “What’s the book about?” She glanced at the cover, running her finger over the worn edges before answering. “It’s about a woman who was reborn to get revenge on her cheating husband. He betrayed her, and in her second life, she’s determined to make him pay.”

Esmeralda's POV Thoughts of a happy marital life flooded my mind but I was trapped in this mansion that had become my new prison. I found myself in a different world. The opulence that surrounds me is both captivating and overwhelming. My days were no longer filled with the hustle and bustle of the streets and how I would run errands for Aunty Martha. I approached slowly on guard of who it could be. When I made it to the edge of the bench, slowly the woman turned towards me with a bright smile.

They want attention, caring, love, respect and there's a writeup or paragraph I read in a book that says, « I've been taught to teach all women with respect. You give a woman something and she will make it 10× better. You give a woman a house, she'll make it a home. You give her groceries, she'll make you a meal. You give her kindness and love, she'll give you her heart. I don't think anyone realises the care and love a woman deserves. You women are amazing. And some of you don't realise how amazing you are. They don't know how to keep their eyes and the thing into their pants where they belong to. They'd run toward you like dogs if you give them a single positive glance. So fucking ludicrous. But here everyone thinks women are fragile and weak. Trust me, a woman can bring a man to fall on his knees with a single glance whether he's dangerous, inhumane or vicious; from a mighty king to a relentless warrior. And history is its biggest testimony.
