For a long time, I didn't move. Then I heard it again—A heartbeat. Not from the room, not from the corridor. Somewhere far away. Slow, heavy and waiting.

It always cut through easily. I could not find her. Somewhere across the course of this morning, between one distracted breath and the next, her heartbeat had simply gone quiet, and I could not pinpoint the exact moment it happened, only that it was gone now, absent in a way that left something uncomfortable pressing low against my ribs. Strange. I let the thought pass without chasing it further, some old instinct telling me this was not the day to spend chasing every strange thing this bond decided to do without my permission. I had a Summit to survive first.

It’s still clinging to me, trying to drag me down one last time. “No!” I scream, pouring every ounce of my willpower into one final push. “You don’t get to win.” A blinding light explodes around me, and for the first time… I feel something. A heartbeat. My heartbeat. “I’m coming back…”

Like I’m trying to convince myself of something that’s already slipping through my hands. Inside, one of the monitors shifts. The rhythm changes. It’s subtle. But I feel it. “Come on…” I murmur, stepping closer to the glass without realising it. “Come on, Cole. Don’t do this.” Another voice. Louder now. “Cardiac arrest.” Everything stops. Not literally. Not physically. But inside me— Everything just… freezes. “No,” I say, louder this time. “No, no, no—” “Charging.”

KIVA I stared up at him, unable to look away. "The only reason I didn't completely lose my goddamn mind when everything started falling apart…" He tapped his chest once, right over his heart. "Was you." Another tap. "This." His voice broke on the last word. "This thing only beats for you." I placed my hand over his where it rested against his chest. "Only you." He pressed my hand harder against him. "You give it life." I could feel his heartbeat beneath my palm, strong and fast and unmistakably alive. My eyes filled completely, spilling over.

One heart, to find the others. The words slip unbidden from my lips. The air thickens. My blood feels molten, rushing faster, louder. In the silence, I can hear the threads of it—my veins, my breath, the steady thrum. And beneath it, faint but real, the echoes of others. Kai’s, slow and steady across the room. A heartbeat not mine, but tethered. My knees weaken. This is too much. Too dangerous. I release it, gasping, clutching my chest. The threads snap back, leaving me shaking but alive.

I have to fix this and I’m not going to give up until I fixed it. When I got to Jordi’s house, I was already feeling my heartbeat. It was really beating so fast, not really furious, but it was fast. I guess part of me feels so charged up to fix this rift between us. I’m glad I met Dominic and his husband Valentine. I’m glad I decided to show up to Xander’s party. I’m glad that I’m being enlightened.

I definitely couldn’t dwell on that at the moment. Breathing deeply seemed to be helping. I checked my heart rate again and saw that it was falling. Normally, my resting heartbeat is slow, like 50 bpm, so it had been working a lot harder than usual. I was glad I hadn’t tried to take Eliza’s exact footage and stick it in Cadence’s mind without building it from my own memory because who knows what that might’ve done to me.

It was as if time had frozen, leaving only two figures standing in the middle—just me and her. My heart no longer had a weak beat in my chest as it had for days. It didn’t skip with uncertainty. Instead, my heartbeat echoed through my body, and power surged through me again. And it wasn’t just once; it was several times, sudden and overwhelming, as though I was drawing it straight from the moon itself.

My heart beat so fast it was about to rip out of my chest. Just when I thought I couldn't take it anymore. A harsh ringtone blasted through the quiet room, shattering the intense heat.
