His grey eyes locked onto Brick’s with the weight of someone who’d seen too much and was done playing. “Start talking.” Brick leaned back, exhaling through his nose. “I don’t know anything about the farmhouse.” “I didn’t ask about the farmhouse,” Reyes replied flatly. “I asked you to talk.” A beat. “What did you see? What did you hear?” Brick rolled his jaw. “I worked the floor, kept the creeps from getting handsy. That’s it.”

Threading our fingers together, her lips curled up in a delicate smile. “Let’s go.” We bounced down the clunky forest path, our bodies jostled left and right, while we tried to listen to Frederick as he explained the first part of the plan. “This here is Brick.” He gestured to the warrior sitting in the passenger seat. Lilac snorted loudly, then clapped a hand over her mouth.

“Can’t wait to learn what happened, you asshole. Thanks so much for keeping us all in the dark.” I studied the tattoos on Brick’s arms. For some reason, that helped center and calm me. My gaze traced the most prominent feature on his forearm: a wolf face peering out from an ink splatter. The only colored part of the image were the wolf’s yellow-brown eyes that seemed to glow and stare right into me. I shuddered and turned my attention down to his wrist, where a silhouetted forest scene at night coated his skin with a full moon and a hooded figure walking among the trees. I could relate to that figure; it seemed totally lost and not sure where to go. “So, how long are we supposed to wait?” Br

Brick is the whole package. Brick goes to the edge of the bed and grabs something that looks like a small leather whip. Its handle is about six inches long with multiple leather strips on the end. Brick sees me staring at it. “ Hold your hand out.” I do and get a feel for it. “It is soft,” I say in surprise. “ It is called a flogger. Tonight isn’t about discipline. It is about getting Speed out of her head before it drags her down.” Brick says. I nod letting him know I understand.
