Chapter 27 Wes: It only took Thomas a few minutes to pick the lock of the door, as he talked lightly about the times they used to play in the sandbox building homes for toy trucks they'd named when they were younger. Reciting the times when he'd sneak cookies out of the porcelain bear cookie jar whenever Ella scraped her knees on the pavement after falling off her bicycle. The wheels spun, grinding sparks against the rails. Then it lurched forward. They gathered speed quickly, tearing out of the yard just as the alarm sirens began to wail. "We did it!" Zephyr laughed, leaning out of the cab window. Tristan sat on a pile of logs, watching the town fade into the distance. He felt the vibration of the train—the massive Aether-engine churning.

Thomas, who was going to the 98th floor where the Pioneers’ main office was located, was suddenly pushed back when few more passengers entered the elevator after a few had left.

"I know!" "Then answer." Thomas looked genuinely troubled. "Twelve?" "It's thirteen!" Noah shouted. Thomas placed his hand dramatically over his chest. "I've been defeated." Noah laughed loudly. Maxine watched the two of them. Her smile slowly softened. Thomas looked... natural with Noah.

"What do you mean no real job? Racing isn't cool enough for you? I love my life, and that's all that matters. I. Love. It." "You love it, huh? Fine. Then I'm going to burn every single one of your bikes!" The line went dead. Thomas smirked and dialed a new number. "Thomas," came a cheery voice on the other end. "Did you find my bikes yet?" "Yup. They're stashed at your dad's villa out in the suburbs. I rented a couple of trucks to haul them out." "Good. Drinks are on me next time." "What are you up to, Thomas? Why don't you come out and celebrate now?"

"Damn it!" Frans shouted, then crumpled the paper. Of course, Frans was very annoyed by the threatening tone that came from an unknown sender. Frans thought, the threats only stopped over the phone while he and Eddy were still at the cafe. The threat continued to his house as the goat's head hangs out on the terrace. "We could just take a few gallons to get us home or close to home. If we don't make it, then we can go back for it. We need to try, Babe." Thomas planted his hands on his hips as he studied my face.
