Thomas emerged not long after, papers in hand, expression unreadable. He didn’t see her at first—or pretended not to. When he did, his steps slowed.
“You’re back early,” he said.
“I picked the boys up on time,” she replied. “Toby wouldn’t stop talking about his spelling test.”
He smiled tightly, a twitch at the corner of his mouth brittle, almost mocking. “Good.”
A pause.
Too long. The kind of silence that presses against your chest. Piper’s fingers twitched against her pencil, but she didn’t speak.
