We were far from perfect, me with my almost butt-revealing hot pink gown, and Thomas dressed to perfection in his expensive dark blue suit, no tie, well-ironed slacks, and fashionable walking stick. He was dressed like a gentleman, which hid the monster he really was inside. "You are here, Thomas," An older man greeted, his dark brown hair spiced with gray here and there. "It's your party, of course I will be here Ezekiel," Thomas replied, answering the other man's smile, with one of his own.

Reyona raised her eyebrows at him. “What am I doing in my home?” “You…you have lost the right to be here. Ain’t you shameless?” Thomas blurted out as a sheen of sweat showed on his powdered forehead. His fitting, stylish coat seemed too tight for him at that point as he reached for the tie at his neck and tried to loosen it. Only that his hand came away empty because he didn’t have any tie on after all. He had on an open-necked cream-coloured shirt under the coat.

He set up his booth in the usual spot near the east entrance, unfolding the folding table and arranging the products with a precision that came from years of routine. Thomas was forty-two. He was a big man, six foot one, with a broad chest, thick arms, and large, calloused hands that were always slightly sticky no matter how many times he washed them. He had dark brown hair going silver at the temples, a thick beard that he kept trimmed short, and calm, steady blue eyes. He took a look at Chloe, put his hand on her head, then on her belly, and told Agatha to bring him salt. Jonas carefully watched him as he poured the salt around Chloe, wondering what that man would do to help her. Thomas was known for his strange ways of helping people, never failing in what he was doing, although his methods were called unorthodox numerous times. After pouring the salt, Thomas took from his pocket a paper bag where he had wolfsbane and put it on Chloe's chest.

Doors lined both sides. Thousands of them. Maybe millions. Stretching farther than sight itself. Then Thomas heard footsteps. Slow. Steady. Approaching. His heart immediately began pounding. Because somehow— he already knew who it was. Then the figure appeared. The creature. Not giant. Not monstrous. Just a man. A tall man dressed in black and gold. Golden eyes. Silver hair. Calm expression. He looked almost normal. Almost. Then the man smiled. And Thomas felt terror. Pure terror.

"Get back," I warned, though I wasn't sure why. The door burst open before anyone could respond. Thomas stumbled through, his clothes torn and dirty, his face streaked with soot and what looked like blood. He looked wild, desperate, nothing like the calm and controlled man who had left us hours ago. "Thomas!" I started toward him, relief flooding through me. "What happened? Are you hurt?"

“No way, it's impossible.” Lord Vedastus looked beyond the screen, and a person walked out from behind. Yes, it was Thomas, who was supposed to be dead! He was alive. Lord Vedastus was dumbfounded. “Are you a demon? Why won’t you die?” Thomas said, “Because I shouldn’t die. I invited these professional actors to act for you. Everything was an act, including the doctor’s appointment, news report, funeral car passing by the streets, and crying people. But there was no rehearsal for the big scene, and they performed everything on the spot. This used up a lot of my money.”

The figure snapped their fingers. A deep growl rumbled behind us. I turned to see rogues carrying a chained figure into the courtyard. My heart stopped. Advisor Thomas. His silver hair was mixed with blood, his kind eyes swollen shut. A collar of black iron glowed around his neck, pulsing with dark power. “Thomas!” I lurched forward, but Davos held me back. “Don’t,” he warned. “It’s a trap.” The hooded figure chuckled. “Oh, he’s quite alive. For now.” They flicked their wrist, and Thomas screamed as the collar burned his skin. “A loyal advisor… until he realized what you are, Katrina. A blend. A stain on our legacy.”
