When the door was pushed open, a muscular man walked in. It was Claire's brother, Sky. It was clear he had come after me. Sky kicked me so hard in the stomach that I curled up. "So you are the one who came to mess up my brother-in-law's wedding?" The crowd cheered. Sky grabbed my hair and threatened, "A mere employee dares to hit someone. Are you out of your mind?" I looked over to Claire. She quietly fiddled with her glass. It was as if whatever was happening to me didn't matter to her at all.

Igor walked ahead with a light step, as if he didn’t feel the weight at all, while I, Pascha, and Trisha followed behind, gasping for breath. The trail was rocky and slippery, with tree roots jutting out from the ground. Towering pine trees lined both sides, their shadows stretching under the afternoon sun. “I... hate... you... Igor...” Trisha panted, dragging her feet, clearly exhausted. Pascha raised an eyebrow, glancing at his brother. “Are you sure this is the right trail? We’ve been walking for over an hour!”

But if I were to recall the moment my fragile heart truly shattered and my world crumbled, it would begin with this day—the day I lost my pup. It was a dim Friday afternoon. The clouds hung low, heavy and dark, threatening to unleash a downpour. The sun lingered patiently behind the gloom, waiting for its chance to illuminate the earth. And just like the sun, my only bright light was the three-foot bundle of joy bouncing happily beside me as we walked through the eerily quiet forest. Alpha Draco’s warning echoed in my mind, my mate's voice carrying its usual edge: “It's not safe to wander around in the forest at this time; be back in less than two hours. I shouldn't have to find you!”

The Void-Walkers. Rowan tossed me into the boat and jumped in, grabbing the oars. He paddled with a desperation that made the wood groan. I looked back. The village was being swallowed by a black fog. Caleb and the old woman were standing their ground, but the Void-Walkers were gliding over the water like skates on ice. "Rowan, they’re coming!" I screamed. The lead Walker reached the back of our boat. It raised a long, spindly arm, its needle-fingers inches from Rowan’s back.

I didn't even wait for a reaction. Once I was outside the hotel, I heard footsteps pounding behind me. I ducked into a narrow side alley just in time. Claire ran right past, still calling my name like a broken record. "Zach! Come on, stop hiding from me! You've been avoiding me for three months! Why won't you even look at me? Zach, please!" And then… slam. She mistook someone for me. Some poor guy who happened to be wearing a shirt the same color as mine. She ran straight up to him and threw her arms around his shoulders.

"You chatted, and now she's visiting our house?" The Walkers were a powerful family, far beyond the Smiths, who were merely the wealthiest in Johnsonville. Forming a connection with the Walkers could greatly benefit the Smith family. Henry was both surprised and excited by Mrs. Walker's personal visit. He was eager to understand Wendy's relationship with her.

Ken and the rest hadn't gone completely crazy just because they were too excited. They did leave some men behind to drive their cars away. As for the rest, they either had broken arms or broken legs, and we're all stuff into their cars like trash. As Jate Woods watch them drive off in a great hurry, he waved and said. "Hope to see you again!" Who would still dare to come here? Henry Copper and the rest drove as quickly as they could and couldn't wait to go as far away as possible from Jate Woods and the rest of his demons.

Before those cups even hit the floor, Taylor was already turning around and walking back out of my room. After two hours it became clear that he wouldn’t be returning. I tried calling, but he didn’t pick up any of my calls or my voicemails. I sat there in a complete state of shock. Pregnant at twenty-one was not part of my plan. Attempted suicide was not part of my plan. Taylor walking out on me again was not part of my plan. Yet here I was dealing with all three.

“What’s done is done. We can’t go back to what we were. “Mr. Rutgers… we’re done here.” I smiled as I took a step back, then opened the door and walked into my apartment. Kit didn’t try to stop me. But I saw him later that night, standing outside my door like a tree rooted to the ground. He didn’t move, not when the wind blew, not even when the rain fell. But what was the point? For some things, once lost, they stay lost. Over the past three years, I had given him seventeen chances. He had let every single one slip through his fingers.
