The window, closed. Locked from outside. Someone nailed it shut while we slept. Someone wanted us to die. I kick it. Once. The glass cracks. Twice. It shatters. Fresh air rushes in. Cold. Clean. Life. "Climb out!" I lift Marcus. He is small. Light. He fits through the broken window, glass tearing his shirt. He doesn't cry. He is brave. He is so brave. I follow. My arm catches on the frame. Glass bites deep. Blood runs down my elbow. I don't stop. I don't look.

’ I stared at him, my heart slamming against my ribs. “What are you doing here?” I whispered, even though he couldn’t hear me through the glass. He didn’t answer, he just knocked again and mouthed it once more. ‘Open the window.’

"Then we run. Ready?" Alexander and Madison both nodded. "One." The door handle turned. "Two." The door started to open, letting in a sliver of light from the hallway. "Three." I swung the pot as hard as I could at the window. The glass exploded with a sound like thunder, sharp pieces flying everywhere. Some of them hit my hands and face, tiny stings like angry bees, but I didn't stop to think about that. "Go!" I shouted, pushing Alexander toward the broken window. "Go go go!"

I fix my dress as tears threaten my eyes. As I am gathering my things to leave, Max says, “Go look out the window, kitten.” Hesitantly, I walk to the floor to ceiling window at the edge of his office. I look out on the skyline to all the other buildings. Max moves behind me. His steady hand moves around my waist, the other pushes against the glass. The sound of his deep voice next to my ear causes a shiver to run through me, “Next time you’re in my office kitten, I am going to make love to you against this window.” There was a slight threat in his voice. As if he dared me to resist.

I almost made myself an enemy of the population by tattling my ward mates’ play dead plan. “The chef cooked more meat this time. It’s a shame that your neighbours have fallen asleep already.” I shifted my gaze because I felt awkward after lying. These women should thank me. Then my eyes caught the view on the window. “The moon is beautiful today, Miss.” “Hmmm. I thought so.” But the wind is too cold outside. I can’t risk my health to see it up close. “The windows are made of thick glass. The cold breeze outside won’t be able to seep their way inside.”

Could he have entered my room through the window? My eyes flicker to the window, trying to make sense of it. Then, it hit me. Of course. He must have climbed the tree outside, and then used it to enter my window. "You are nuts," I say, my head shaking in disbelief. "Why on earth would you go through the window to get into my room?" "I had to find a way to see you," He answers, keeping his tone casual, as though breaking into my room is the most normal thing in the world.

I got up from my bed and walked towards the window. Parting the curtains to the side, the blinding light of the sun piercing through the window panes made me close my eyes for a moment. I closed my eyes tightly then opened them slowly until I got adjusted to the glare. The moment I gazed into the distance, all I could see was the rich and sprawling greeneries below the wide canopy of the sky, animated by its sailing, fluffy clouds. From where I stood, it looked like I was on top of a hill overlooking the rolling stretch of farms and plain below.

I shift forward, eyes narrowing. Through the window, I can see the faint outline of a crib. Ariana’s shadow moves back and forth, slow, rhythmic, soothing. She’s singing. I can’t hear the words, but I know the melody. I press my hand against the cold windowpane of the car, fingers trembling. Something inside me twists tighter, darker. The glass fogs under my breath. I draw a line through it, just one, like I’m cutting the night in half. “Enjoy it while it lasts,” I murmur.
