Dax's words were like a sharp knife that stabbed my heart, reopening a healing wound. His words were like salt that rubbed an open injury. It stung me, filling me with searing pain as I remembered my past. Transferring all the aggression on the windows, I scrubbed them with all my might, crying profusely. By the time I got to the brothers' window, I wiped my tears and cleaned my face with the dew that dropped on my palm. Their window was tinted in such a way that it reflected the image of the things outside only. No one would be able to see them from the inside.

I demanded, my voice quivering with a mix of fear and confusion. He began to speak, but his words were lost to me. Seeing my inability to hear him, he gestured urgently towards the window. Reading his lips, I discerned his plea: "Help, help, open the window." Reluctantly, I approached and slid the window open, a chill seeping into the room and causing shivers to run down my spine. I move over to the window and have a look. There is nothing but trees everywhere outside, so that doesn’t help. Tell me where I am. I then look at the window itself. I smile. There are no bars going across the window and the lock is an old-style turn type. I try the lock and it surprises me that it opens. I then try to pull the window up, but unfortunately, it doesn’t move. I try again, only this time I change my position, hit and push up and smile as the window actually opens. I spent the rest of the day in my room, and by night the packhouse was silent around me. I stood by the window, the same window Julius once found words burned across. Now the glass was clean. At least it looked that way. Outside, the world breathed slow. Inside, my reflection watched me too closely. I leaned nearer. It leaned back, but a beat late. “Stop,” I whispered. It smiled. In my own voice it said, He’s not the only one watching. A hairline crack split the glass from top to bottom, thin as lightning. I stumbled back, pressing my hand to the mark that had begun to pulse again.
