The Reversal Emily's POV The third frequency did not fade after the combined shift. That was the first thing Yoana established in the three days of monitoring that followed the tenth birthday morning. The amber-gold and the deep-water-blue had always been present in the bond-network between the twins as operating frequencies even in non-shifted form — the acknowledgement and anchor functions running continuously at their standard depth, the shifted expression being the full-capacity version of what was always running at baseline. The third frequency — the original bond made visible — had emerged during the shifted combined function and had not subsided when both twins shifted back.

"If she's got two, maybe one of hers is doing that. Arriving late. Not weak. ‘Late.’ " Ilsa went still. “That's … That would explain the note not resolving. That is, not two competing amplitudes, but one current signal and one delayed echo of an earlier state." She looked at Corel like he'd handed her something she hadn't known to ask for. "Your motor delay isn't just cost. It's the same mechanism, smaller." "Small comfort," Corel said, but there was no bitterness in it, just the flat exhaustion of a body still relearning its own timing.

Tessa kept refreshing my results page, muttering to herself the whole time. "No way. This must be a system glitch!" The principal and a few reporters came over, staring straight at my score screen. My score was blank. Below it was a line in bold: "Total score: You are ranked in the top 50. Please check back on the 27th for more details." Everyone in the room was stunned. Even the comments section froze for several seconds before it exploded again.

‘On the count of three,’ we start stretching our limbs to start the counting. ‘One’ Marcela links me. ‘Two’ I link back, and both of us say in unison, ‘THREE!’ We run at one another, shifting in the process. Passing one another, I feel her powers transfer to me and my powers to hers. This rush of powers didn't last long. I looked at the gold neon coming out of her wolf; it was blinding me for a small second or two. 'Your wolf is SILVER!' Marcela linked me, and I have to say this was amazing.

I smiled, though a tiny, cold wire of anxiety remained coiled tightly around my heart. "Now finish your coffee. You have a nine o'clock lecture, and I have fifty-two medical transport routes to log before the afternoon shift changes."

This time, however, I decide to be good. "I'm sure." Making a point to add a smile I don't feel so he knows I'm serious, I say, "But the next time we argue over whether men or women are more stubborn, I'm going to remind you that this one," I point to my stomach, "is already three days late with no sign of moving out any time soon." Caleb smirks. "I'll keep that in mind." Turning back to the screen, we watch in silence as the out-of-town game goes into the bottom of the ninth inning. Good for the Astros. Bad for me. I'd like to get this story written so we can move on to the next game.

“You want to make it chase multiple clocks.” “Yes.” Not randomness. Not chaos. Layered temporal distortion. Enough to force the predator fragments out of alignment with each other. Serik studied her carefully. “That risks fragmenting our own lattice.” “Yes.” “But only briefly.” Implementation began immediately. The main spire adjusted harmonic cycles in subtle, staggered offsets. Western corridors shifted half-phase. Southern timberline delayed response by micro-intervals. Northern basin advanced slightly ahead. To an outside observer, nothing appeared different. But inside the lattice—

He had been looking at it for several minutes before I registered it. “What’s wrong?” I said. “Nothing,” he said. The specific nothing of someone who means something. I looked at him. He looked at the phone. I left it for another few minutes. Then my own phone buzzed on the cushion beside me, a notification arriving with the particular vibration pattern of the academy’s team updates… I had the channel on alert for exactly this kind of timing-related announcement. I checked it. The match had been shifted. Two days from now rather than the original date, a scheduling change from the venue that the academy had forwarded without preamble.

The betrayal burned deep. Before I could even process it, the speakers around the whole beach started glitching loud. Music cut off mid-beat. Then a cold, clear voice boomed across the entire party: “WELCOME TO THE SIXTY-FIFTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION OF A MURDERER WHO KILLED HIS WIFE FIFTEEN YEARS AGO…” Gasps and whispers exploded everywhere. “…AND GUESS WHO HE IS?” People froze mid-drink, mid-dance.

"Make close attention on channel B-21 and subsequent messages. I'm going to encrypt all messages recently received completely." I input another set of commands, pulling out all the pieces of text that referenced OmegaShift. The result was a rainbow of panicky declarations: ".final trigger. shift complete. OmegaShift imminence." All this pointed to one thing—a synchronized move that would send the whole market into chaos.
