"We have three thousand dollars in the reserve account, Lyra," she said, her voice dropping into a hard, focused register. "We can pack the boxes tonight. We take the early morning bus to Milwaukee. Or Gary. Somewhere out of the state jurisdiction."
"No," I said, looking over at Leo and Maya, who were currently building a small red tower in the corner, entirely oblivious to the storm raging five feet away. "We can't keep running forever, Kat. Moving them across state lines with no medical records, no job, no stability... it’ll kill them. They need their routine. They need the clinic."
