He is barefoot, the cold floor probably feeling strange against his skin.
He looks around the ring, deeply confused. He does not belong here. He looks at me softly, bowing his head.
“Hi,” he says. I can tell he’s afraid; he looks like a breeze could knock him over. “My name is Toby.”
“What’s… happening?” he asks. “I heard I’ll be in a game, and at the end of the game, I’ll get enough money to feed myself.”
I stay mute, gawking at Toby with nothing to say. He’s staring back at me, still confused. He doesn’t know what he’s doing here, or the fact that he’d have to kill or die.
