By Saturday morning, I was so immersed in the character I was playing that when I looked in the mirror, I barely recognized myself. “You look like trouble,” Maddox said, appearing behind me as I studied my reflection. He was wearing a black suit and had disguised himself with darker hair and contacts that changed his eyes from brown to grey. He looked like a completely different person. “I look terrified,” I corrected. “That too. But no one will see your fear. The morning light streamed into the lavish hotel room, illuminating the opulent disorder. Rafe stood before a full-length mirror, his torso bare. The water from his shower still gleamed on his skin. With a focused expression, he carefully applied the final pieces of a intricate, temporary tattoo to his upper back—a coiling serpent whose scales seemed to shift in the light.
