Sandy froze.
Her hand, still hovering near Tiana’s, dropped to her side. Her lips parted, but nothing emerged. For once, the youngest Toriaga, who had always had a quick word, a gentle defense, and a fierce loyalty, was utterly speechless. Her eyes filled with sudden tears, but she didn’t blink them away. She simply stood there, stunned into stillness, the coffee cups forgotten on the side table growing cold.
Tiana’s gaze returned to Nikolai. Something glinted in her eyes: disbelief, fear, and a fragile trace of what might have been wonder. She swallowed once, twice. When she finally spoke, her voice was barely more than a whisper.
