Then Adrian said, “There was a man named Daniel Voss.” Lucas’s mouth went dry. The name landed inside him like a stone dropped into deep water. “Voss,” he whispered. Adrian nodded once. “He worked in legal investigations. Years ago, he found records that could damage men who were building businesses across Varna City.”

Then, his voice drops quiet and lethal. “You think I don’t care?” I meet his gaze, refusing to back down. “I think you’re scared to.” The air shifts heavier, charged with something I can’t quite name. Alonso rises slowly from his chair, his towering frame cutting through the room’s cold elegance. “You don’t know anything about what I feel,” he says, each word laced with ice. “Then tell me,” I whisper. “Because all I see is a man too afraid to let anyone in.”

“Leniency is out of my vocabulary, and there are few reasons to receive my wrath. Provocation for one, another is betrayal.” Her words were said like they were the most basic of her rules, but it hit Voltaire straight into his conscience. Betrayal. He may not be her friend yet, but he has betrayed her already by approaching her with a hidden agenda. Another thorn that seems to block and cause pain in his throat. He was swaying again. She sounds like she knew something, and she is giving him the chance to come clean. Voltaire rubbed his face helplessly. Voltaire “Okay, wait…”
