LOGINLucas Bennett is perfection. He is silent, elegant and untouchable. The world thinks he’s the most beloved person at Adrian Chase’s side: the CEO’s obsession, his treasure, his pride and his everything. Nevertheless, love doesn’t feel like this, not when your body isn’t yours and not when your past has been erased. Not when the man who touches you is the same one who destroyed your life. Adrian gave Lucas everything: beauty, luxury, and a place beside him, but Lucas wants only one thing in return: his life back. Therefore, he’s willing to burn Adrian’s world to ashes to get it.
View MoreRain came down hard, like a curtain of water, hitting the city streets. It felt like the sky was trying to wash everything away. Lucas ran, his head down, his shoes splashing in the wet, his jacket sticking to his skinny body. His chest hurt, and every breath he took was a gasping sound that seemed too loud in the quiet around him. The city was awake—bright lights blurred in the puddles, the low sound of cars somewhere far off, and the occasional distant wail of a siren—but to Lucas, it all felt fake, like a movie he wasn't part of.
He didn't fit in here. He had never really fit in anywhere. And now, a small voice inside him, deep in his chest, whispered that it was too late to even try.
He turned a corner, and a shadow moved. His heart stopped. He didn't know if it was someone coming to help him, or someone coming to take him back to the place he had been running from. His feet slowed, and the cold rain seemed to sting him even more.
A long, black car rolled silently up to the side of the road. It gleamed, showing the neon lights in wavy lines on its sides. The door opened, and a man stepped out. He seemed almost unreal, his presence cutting through the noisy night like a sharp blade. It was Adrian Chase.
Lucas’s breath hitched. The way Adrian moved made the air feel thick, a heavy feeling that drew your attention. He was calm. Perfectly put together. It was scary how precise he seemed. The storm around them didn't seem to affect him at all.
“You don’t belong here,” Adrian said. His voice was quiet, clear, and easy to hear. He didn't sound angry, but there was a feeling of power in his words.
Lucas stood still. “I… I’m not supposed to be here,” he said, his voice barely heard over the sound of the rain.
Adrian’s eyes took in everything about Lucas. He looked him up and down—his wet hair stuck to his forehead, his soaked clothes, the way his hands shook—and his gaze stayed on him in a way that felt strange.
“It’s clear you don’t. So why are you?”
Lucas swallowed, trying to get his spinning thoughts to stop. “I… I have nowhere else to go.”
Adrian’s lips moved into a slight smile that made Lucas uneasy. “You’re running from someone,” he said, as if he knew Lucas’s whole story. “And they won’t stop until they find you.”
Lucas nodded, unable to speak. He didn’t know how to explain who or what he was running from, and a part of him knew no one would understand.
Adrian moved closer. The space between them became small, and Lucas could smell the faint scent of leather, a sharp hint of cologne, and something else—danger, hidden and controlled.
“You look like you need someone to protect you,” Adrian said, his voice almost normal.
Lucas’s chest felt tight. “I… I don’t—”
“You do,” Adrian cut him off smoothly. “And I can do that.”
Lucas shook his head. “I don’t want…” His voice broke. “I don’t want anyone’s help.”
Adrian’s eyes were cool, but not mean. “Help isn’t the right word. Protection, staying alive, a place to rest—those words fit better. Help means you have a choice. I’m offering you what is real.”
Lucas tried to step back, but Adrian’s hand shot out, firm and strong, grabbing his arm. The touch wasn’t rough, but it made it clear there was no way to get away. Adrian didn’t ask; he took.
The rain pounded louder, but Lucas barely heard it. His mind raced, trying to figure out what this meant—why this stranger, a man he didn’t know, was suddenly the key to his survival.
Adrian’s grip was steady as he guided Lucas toward the car. “Get in. Now.”
Lucas paused for just a second, but the need to survive was stronger than his pride or his fear of the unknown. He climbed in, shaking, wet, and completely unprepared for what was about to happen.
Inside, the car smelled of leather and a light cologne, with a faint, almost electric, metallic scent. The inside was quiet except for the rain, and Lucas felt more exposed than he had in years. It felt like every part of him was being watched, every move he made was being judged. Adrian sat across from him, his eyes steady.
“Who are you?” Lucas asked, his voice shaking.
“I’m the man who decided you wouldn’t die tonight,” Adrian said, his voice flat and impossible to read.
Lucas’s eyes grew wide. “Why would you…why would anyone do that?”
Adrian’s face didn’t change. “Because sometimes, dying or staying alive comes with rules.”
Lucas’s heart sank. He had learned a long time ago that rules always meant there was a price to pay. He didn’t like prices.
“What… what do you want from me?”
Adrian leaned back, resting his hands together. “Not what you think. I want to see if you can live under me… if you can get through the next hard time. That’s all.”
Lucas tried to find the truth in his words, but Adrian’s face gave nothing away. He wasn’t mean, not really, and he wasn’t kind either. He was something else—a power. A presence. Something Lucas knew he couldn’t ignore.
Hours went by as the car moved through the wet streets. Lucas tried not to be scared, tried to think and make a plan. But every idea ended the same way: he had nowhere to go. He could either keep running into the storm without a direction, or trust what Adrian said.
And even thinking about trust made him shiver.
Adrian spoke again, his voice almost casual. “We’re not stopping until I know you’re safe. That’s my only rule.”
Lucas looked at him, trying to find any sign of honesty. “Safe… from them?”
“From anyone who wants to see you hurt,” Adrian said. “And sometimes, from yourself.”
The car stopped outside a building Lucas didn’t recognize. Its walls of glass reflected the city lights, looking smooth, unwelcoming, and almost unreachable. Adrian opened the door, nodding for Lucas to follow.
“Inside,” Adrian said. “You’ll understand more in the morning. For now… be quiet, stay alive.”
Lucas hesitated. Every feeling inside him screamed to run. But the rain had soaked him through, his body ached from running for so long, and a part of him knew this wasn’t just another place to hide. This was a new beginning.
He stepped inside.
The door closed behind him, shutting out the storm.
Adrian’s hand rested lightly on his arm—not in a threatening way, not gently, but like he was marking him. The weight of his touch was silent, claiming. Lucas felt a strange feeling in his stomach. He was caught. And yet… a quiet, unwanted feeling of being safe mixed with his fear. He had survived. For now. Lucas’s eyes got used to the light, looking around the space: modern, clean, everything perfectly in place like no one lived there. A place made for control. For power. For a world he didn’t understand. Adrian watched him, quiet and still. Finally, he spoke: “You are safe here. For now. But nothing lasts forever. Remember that.” Lucas nodded, but he couldn’t find any words. There was nothing to say. He had already understood something too cold to put into words: the man who had saved him tonight wouldn’t let him go—ever. And the storm outside was nothing compared to the one he had just walked into. The words on the car screen stayed there even after Marcus killed the display.Bring him, or we wake Milo.Lucas stared at the black screen, but he could still see the white letters burned into it. His body had stopped shaking, yet the fear had not left. It had only changed shape.Milo.The name sat inside him like a hand reaching through a wall.Noah looked at Lucas, then at Adrian. “Whoever sent that knows the files copied.”Marcus drove faster through the rain. “They also know our car system. I am switching routes.”Adrian’s voice was cold. “Do it.”Lucas turned slowly. “Do not speak over me like I am not here.”Adrian looked at him. “You are barely conscious.”“I am conscious enough to know that message was for me.”“It was a trap.”“It was Milo.”No one answered. That silence made Lucas’s chest tighten. He touched the coat where Daniel’s photograph rested. His father had left proof. The proof had led to Facility N-17. Facility N-17 had led to Milo. Every answer opened another wou
Lucas remembered the voice before he remembered the face.It came from far away, the kind of voice a person used when asking a child to stop crying. That made it worse. Cruel voices were easier to fear. Gentle ones could enter the mind and stay there.Adrian carried him through the red-lit hallway while alarms pulsed around them. Marcus moved ahead. Noah ran behind them with Daniel’s box pressed against his chest. The doctor shouted that Lucas should not be moved, but no one listened.Lucas barely heard him.The voice from the screen kept playing inside his head.Elias, come home. His ribs burned with each step. The chip pulsed as if it was happy to be remembered. Lucas dug his fingers into Adrian’s coat, not for comfort, but to stay awake.“I know him,” Lucas whispered.Adrian’s arms tightened. “Do not follow the memory.”Lucas gave a weak laugh. “You think memories ask permission?”Adrian said nothing. They reached the service elevator, but Marcus stopped short. “No.”The numbers ab
Pain pulled Lucas under before he could fight it.One moment, Adrian’s arms were around him. The next, the clinic lights stretched into white lines, and every sound became far away. Noah was shouting. Marcus was ordering the doors locked. Somewhere, the technician cried that the system was still connected.Lucas heard none of it clearly. The beep inside him became louder than all their voices. It was not just a sound anymore. It felt like a hand inside his ribs, pressing, turning, reminding his body that it had never fully belonged to him.Adrian lowered him to the floor. “Lucas, stay with me.”Lucas wanted to laugh, but the pain swallowed it.Lucas.That name was soft in Adrian’s mouth, careful and almost desperate. But beneath it, another name opened like a wound.Elias.A white room flashed behind his eyes. A thin boy curled beside a wall. Small fingers pushed under a door and touched his.“Do not forget,” the boy whispered.Lucas gasped.“Milo,” he breathed.Adrian froze above him
The beep followed Lucas into the car.It was not loud, yet he heard it beneath everything. Rain struck the windows. Noah breathed hard beside him. Marcus spoke into a phone in the front seat, giving orders in a voice too calm for what had just happened. But Lucas heard only the sound under his ribs.Beep.Beep.Beep.Adrian sat beside him, one hand near Lucas’s shoulder but not touching him. That almost made Lucas angry. After everything, Adrian was still careful in the wrong ways.“Stop looking at me,” Lucas said.Adrian’s eyes did not move. “Your face is losing color.”“My face belongs to me. Let it lose anything it wants.”Noah looked between them. “This is not the time.”Lucas turned on him. “You do not get to choose the time either.”Noah went quiet. The scar burned again, and Lucas bent forward, clutching the metal box to his chest. The flash drive was hidden in his fist. The silver key pressed against his palm. His father’s photograph sat inside his coat like a warm wound.Adri
