I played around on my phone, but there weren't any monsters around currently and I wasn't rated high enough to enter the gym yet. I looked around, watching everyone play on their phones. At first, I thought it was kind of dumb that everyone was just standing there, but the longer I watched, the more I saw people interacting and being friendly. For being an individually played game, people were being remarkably social. “No, no, NO, NO!” Tommy suddenly cried, mashing on his phone screen. He looked about ready to throw it on the sidewalk. “This can't be happening!” “What's wrong, Tommy?” I asked. “Are you losing?”

Tommy replied, too focused on his book that he never took his eyes off it. "Can't you call her?" Erin asked. "Daddy said that she has something to do in Zidonia," Tommy said. "He told me not to call her all the time." Erin leaned in to whisper mischievously, "Do you think your daddy misses your mommy?" Tommy wheeled on her right then, his large round eyes fixed on her. "You really like gossiping, Aunt Erin." Erin sighed and stroked her belly. "I can't go anywhere because of this, while you had a good time."

*** Vincent was waiting in the car when I came out, his face grim. "Found our rat," he said as I slid into the passenger seat. "Who?" "Tommy Chen. Low-level guy, been with us for three years. Clean record, never raised any flags." He pulled into traffic. "Antonio's been blackmailing him. Tommy's got a gambling problem—owes about two hundred grand to one of Moretti's loan sharks." I felt the familiar cold settle over me. The calm that came before violence. "Where is he?" "Safe house in Brooklyn. Waiting for you."

This knocked off several peacefully numb hours. Bobby didn’t see Tommy all day. When he asked around on his afternoon break someone mentioned Tommy called in sick, which made sense. Tommy put away a lot of beer last night. While he was usually “that guy” who could drink everyone under the table and report bright and alert to work the next day, Tommy had mentioned something to Bobby about heading to The Stumble Inn after the fair to “see if Sandy’s knocking around there.”
