Silver streaks ran through his dark hair. He was easily in his late thirties, with an intense, commanding presence that made the air feel heavier. Our eyes met. Whoever called could wait. He dozed off right there on the couch, waking three hours later. He rubbed his eyes, sat up, and grabbed his phone to check alerts. Kingsley nearly fumbled the phone in shock at a missed call from his ex, Cole, plus a voicemail. Kingsley hadn’t talked to Cole in years. Cole wanted friendship post-breakup, but Kingsley hurt too much, too stubborn for that. He loved Cole fully, even at the end, so friends never worked.
