It was subtle but reminded me of my favorite place in the forest beside our old pack lands. There was this stream that came up into a small clearing that made for an amazing water hole for the friends that I shared the space with. There was this tree in the clearing fell by lightning one summer, smelled of the forest but was a stronger smokey scent. Olivera's finger throbbed with pain as she stared at the small drop of blood on the page. The circle, now darkened with her blood, seemed to pulse with a life of its own. She pushed it away from her lap, and shifted to the other side. Her eyes widened in incredulity as white smoke began to rise from the book, curling and twisting in the air. The scent of lavender and rose filled the room, a soothing contrast to the sharp pain in her finger. She watched in awe and trepidation as the smoke began to form shapes, reacting as if it were alive.

The smoke from the burning jungle below no longer polluted the sky, it stayed within the jungle. From time to time a tree would fall over, taking a few others with it. Other times, the flames would climb to the top of a tree and the team would watch it slowly burn to Ash. ​Winnie’s POV ​The smoke from the southern pass lingered long after the fire had died. It was a greasy, thick vapor that clung to the needles of the Obsidian Tree like a parasite. Even with the Black Star gone, the air did not feel clean. It felt heavy with the scent of scorched brass and the bitter tang of spent resonance. Zane POV I’m no coal mining expert, but it was clear even as we set down that something was very wrong. A thick, dark plume of smoke was coming from one of the many holes in the ground, and I couldn’t help but notice the dozens of dead or dying trees all around us. When the door swung open, I smelled death and fear—not the thrilling smells of the hunt, but the sour, heavy odors of long-term sorrow and festering loss. By the time my work boots hit the greasy soil, I knew this was going to be very bad.

The smoke reached me before the flames did. It crawled into my lungs like something alive, thick with burning pine and a rot underneath that had nothing to do with wood or ash. Something darker. Something that made my wolf press itself flat against the inside of my chest and refuse to move. I kept walking anyway. My silver feet pressed silently into the frozen ground as our small group pushed deeper into the Shadowpine trees, swallowed by the kind of darkness that felt like it had eyes.
